Does anyone know what axles came stock in a mid-80's Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 454/th-400/208 drivetrain? I know a guy who has one for sale, the motor's been rebuilt, it supposedly has a 4" lift and 33's on it. I'm sure it's got a little rust, but I'm just looking for something to take hunting (and rip apart for the drivetrain later). He's asking $2200, any opinions on whether the price sounds reasonable? Thanks!!

sounds like a fair price, but thats w/o seeing it or knowing more about it.. the front axle will be a GM 10 bolt, real similar to a dana 44, and the rear will probably be a semi-floater gm 14 bolt (9.5" ring gear) or maybe if you're lucky it will be a gm 14 bolt full floater (10.5" ring gear)... they're all good axles.. the 10 bolt gets a bad rep cuz its the smallest front axle youre gonna find on the chevy's but theres nothing wrong with it. both rear axles are extremely strong, the full floater is very desireable and bulletproof.

I wondered what rear axle they used... I was hoping maybe they actually used dana 60's in the rear. I was afraid it might only have a 10-bolt. Not a big deal though. I'm hoping to take a look at it this week yet. One thing's for sure, if it has a hitch on it it's going to be a great tow vehicle!

it will definately not have a 10 bolt or '60 in the rear.. do you know how to tell the difference between the semi & full floater? if not I could explain.. let us know what it ends up being

What I meant was I was afraid it would have the 10-bolt in the front. I didn't know what rear end they used in the mid-80's. I know that some of the Ford 3/4 & 1 ton trucks came with Dana 60's & didn't know if Chevy used them as well. I know what a full floater looks like. Is there a way visually to tell the difference between the 9.5" semifloater and the 10.5" full floater? I know they have the same number of bolts on the center cover, so that obviously wouldn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well if you know what a full floater looks like, that should do it.

If you dont, the full floater will have the hubs that stick thru the center cap hole of the wheels.. the semi floater will have axle flanges just like a 10 bolt ... The semi floater looks like a bloated 10 bolt, the full floater pumpkin is more of an egg shape
