front done(springs anyway)

It took me about 5 hours to get what you see done. Still need to replace the shocks, steering arm and brake lines. I also need to buy a 7/8th deep socket so I can finish tightening the rear u-bolts. Hopefully Tuesday I'll be able to swap the steering arm, have to buy my brake lines tomorrow and have other brake issues to work out(need to replace a couple hard lines). I found it was easier to just cut all the u-bolts off, since the kit came with all 8 u-bolts. Also cut the front spring bolts out. The shackle end spring bolts actually came off real easy.

looking good , 5 hours seems like good time, cant wait to start mine, got a question for ya, when you take the springs off as long as got front off ground are they under any pressure? i took some off an old road runner one time and they popped and almost took head off lol. i think ill take my bed off too and sand everything down and undercoat, looks like a breeze to work on while its off, can two people lift off a bed or they pretty heavy?

I don't remember how long it took me, but it was a good while for everything, I didn't torch anything off though, or cut. I soaked everything with PB Blaster the day before and the impact wrench took care of the rest. Its nice having every air tool you need and having all the tools a man could want except for some of the special stuff looks just like my kit except I bought some rear springs off ebay for mine.

Budweis, Take the u-bolts off the axle first then you can lower the axle and the spring will not be under a load. Don't forget to remove the shocks, they will limit travel down.
Destructo, This was my 4th lift install and after throwing away u-bolts after removing them, I made short work of it by cutting them off. My wimpy impact wrench wouldn't take them off.

ok thanks for the tip, nothing like getting killed to ruin your weekend lol, i dont have a torch but maybe i could cut those off with pnuematic cut off tool. im going to start taking my bed off this week and get the new differential on the 17th once i get started on ill post some pics on how coming along. i definitely gonna have to go 4" suspension and 2" body as i just figured out truck already has 2 1/2" lift so a 4" wouldnt do much. i had truck somewhere else so didnt realize till went and got. i was wondering how it had 33's on it with no lift lol. or you think im better off going 6" suspension and no body lift?

I used an angle grinder. Well I took a body lift off of the 71 and because of it I've had to correct so many things. Richard Morgan just installed 6" lift on his 72 and I took it for a drive. It looked good to me at the driveshaft angles, definetly need longer brake lines though.

Looking great! You will be cruisin soon. Don't you just love those rusty midwest suspension bolts? lol That new exhaust looks good. I bet that made it sound a whole lot better.

Looks like a pretty solid truck! I'm hoping to be doing the same thing soon. I have a '72 K10 I was going to do, but the cab's pretty rusty. I just found a nice '68 GMC K15 from the southwest that's virtually rustfree. I'm hoping to pick it up next week. Always nice to see another GMC!!!
