I was driving along today, and was rolling down the window when the window crank decided it had enought and broke off in my hand. i have a new crank, and i cant figure out to get the old one off, and new one on. only the handle of the old one broke, so im not left with much. Im told there is a specialty tool, but i cant wait 2 weeks for this tool to get here. i need 2 know how to get these things swapped. Any suggestions? these look like a real pita. thanx guys.

You can remove it with a home made tool. Just bend a piece of wire with a little hook on the end, push the plastic inner door panel (assuming you're referring to the '72 c10) in away from the handle and you will see a little clip that's shaped like a horse shoe. Hook the clip and pull it out, watch where it goes cause they like to fly when they're pulled off. Now your door handle should slide right off the regulator spline. Installation is the reverse.

you can even use a small flathead screwdriver for removing the clip, but make SURE that you either catch the clip or watch and see where it lands. sure is a PITA to find in a gravel driveway...just ask me how I know

First look at your new handle and examine the spring steel clip that retains the handle. From looking at the handle you will be able to tell that the clip will either slide off from the front or back of handle depending upon the direction it was installed. Most commonly you will need to slide clip to rear as the factory almost always slid the clip on from the rear. Now insert a small screwdriver between the door escutcheon and the window crank and catch either the top or bottom end of the clip with the screwdriver tip and push this will push the clip off the handle, once glip is removed pull the handle off. When installing the new one be sure clip is slid on handle from rear side and push the handle on the window regulator shaft, the spring steel clip will spread open and back closed locking the handle in place.
You may want to consider lubing your window regulator & trcks with a good lithium grease to reduce the amount of pressure required to roll your windows up & down. GMCPaul |
