carb adjustments
the truck keeps dying on my whenever i put it in gear. it was dying in park too, until i messed with the screws to turn the idle up.
i need to know how to get this thing to run right so i can atleast test drive it. |

Well... what have you done so far. So far as of the breakin of the motor? Do you have vaccum leaks you dont know about? That could be a major culprit.

did you adjust your idle speed screws to turn the idle rpm up. its been awhile since i had a q-jet but i think there are two of them, one on the driver side that is the over all idle speed control where the throttle bracket rests and one on the passenger side that will turn the idle up while the choke is on. i may not be rembering that right.
but if you have turned your idle speed up and it still dies i would suspect mabey a vacuum leak like rolf suggested

i'm getting some timing tape tommorow so i can atleast tell what my timing is. i'm also gonna borrow a timing gun from a friend.

so would autozone or any local part store carry timing tape?

most of them don't carry it. if you do find some make sure you get the one that is for your diameter balancer. the larger the balancer the larger the spaces between the marks on the tape will be

you can make your own timing tape pretty easily. just find the circumference of your balancer (diameter*Pi) and then divide that by 360. this will tell you the distance between each degree mark you need to make on the tape. you can do it on a regular piece of masking tape and stick it on there to get you going until you can order a real tape
