Sorta OT: power steering issues

Alright it's off topic cuz it's not in my 69 but i figure not much diff between a ps system. i've got my 85/95 s-10 blazer (85 outsides, 95 drivetrain) well my PS is acting funny. At low speeds and only infrequently it'll be REAL hard to turn, seems odd. I'm wondering if the pump or the box are going bad or both. it's always had issues keeping aligned cuz of the tires/off-roading i do and i'm sure that li'l ps system isnt designed for what i've put it through.
so #1 how to tell if pump is going or if box is going
#2 anything i can do myself? rebuild kit for the pump or box?
#3 is this gonna cost me a fortune?
thanks fellas

I would assume you'd know if the pump was going bad if it starts to make noise, like a hum, or a squeal (not the belt) or cavitation noises inside. Mine is, so I know it's on its way out. Once it goes it goes. No pressure.

The box is a little bit different. How much play do you have in the shaft that goes to the steering wheel? What happens when you turn the wheel all the way to the left or right when the truck is running?

I'm getting a sort of thumping noise when I turn my wheel all the way to the right while I go around corners. It's getting worse.

no noises it's just tough. the shaft has always had some play. probably about 2" or maybe a little more, i'm talkign side to side on the steering wheel that is. When i turn it all the way left or right it just makes a li'l more noise at the ends, but it's always done that, so i thought it was normal. thanks for the help.

Does it get easier if you raise the engine rpm?

yeah it does usually but it's acting up infrequently. but mostly all at low speeds (lower than 1000rpm i guess) it's got 31" tires so it's tuff to turn those buggers when it's not helping out. like i said it's infrequent so it's either happy or it'll act up around a turn every 1 out of 10 times maybe at low speeds. thanks

That sounds to me like a problem in the steering box. I just had a steering box rebuilt, it's a quick ratio from a 75 TransAm that I'm putting in my Chevelle. They charged me 80.00, and it's ready to go. Just picked up a rebuilt pump at Auto Zone yesterday for 54.99. The pulley was a bugger to get off the core pump. Do yourself a favor and borrow the puller at the parts store (and use an electric drill to pull it off)
