dana 44 carrier ?
Just bought a 71 K-10 for a wood hauler around the farm...problem is the PO said something was wrong with the front end(no problem the price was right) turns out the carrier and the pinion gears are all trash. My question is: what carriers will interchange, it has 3.07 gears, so does my donor have to have the same or what range of ratios will work? I have a 44 out of a 68 K-20 with 4.56 gears but I assume that is different..am I right? Any one with swapping experience or spare parts----Thanks in advance.

Your front and rear gears need to be the same. You can't have the front end running slower that the rear end when you are in 4WD. Your best bet is to find another front axle and swap out the entire thing. The cost to change out the gears will run $200 plus parts minimum. Find a 3.07 axle from 1971 to 198X and bolt it in. I don't know the year that GM when to the 10 bolt front. You'll want to stay away from them unless you have no other choice. If you do want to change the ratio you will need front and rear axles swapped out.

burb-was wondering if I could use the carrier out of the 4.56 axle? I have done gear changes before, just need to know if the 4.56 carrier is the same as the 3.07 carrier.
Senator- shipping would be a killer I'm afraid, unless you want to pull the carrier out and just ship that. Still looking around here close to home for parts, Thanks for the replys, Gord |

Gord, the 4.56 carrier you have, unfortunately, is not the same as the 3.07 in the K10. I believe the split is 3.92 and up.
