700r4 or 200r4???
im wanting to put an overdrive trans in my truck when i get started on it. which would you all prefer? im not sure what rear gear the truck has in it but its real low. 67 3/4 ton with a '74 350 and the original 4 spd granny gear. which trans would be best and why? what all is involved in this swap? crossmember? driveshaft? what year trans should i look for? i want one that not computer controlled of course. thanks for the help fellas!

behind a SBC 350 go with the 700R4.It can the power of the 350 better than the 200.Both can be beefed up to handle loads of power and tourque.Highly modified 200R4 were put in Buick Grand Nationals so you know they can handle some power when modified.
The 700R4 (in stock form) uses a signal from a computer to lockup the tourque converter but there are plenty of after market conversions wiring kits that give the driver the ability to lock-up the T/C. Here are an example of the wiring kits. HERE OR HERE OR HERE ANOTHER ONE

the 200R4 uses the computer controlled lockup as well. I'd go with the 200R4, even if it DID cost a bit more. First, you get a steeper OD gear (.67 vs. .70 in the 700R4), and second, the gear ratios are more evenly spaced.

I'm planning on putting a 200 in my '68 el Camino. It has a mild 327 (300hp or so) and the experts say that the 200 is good in stock form for 300-350hp. In addition to the gear advantages already mentioned, the 200's case is approximately the same size as a TH350 short tail and uses the same yoke, so you can use the same driveshaft. Heads up when you go looking, because the 200 comes in chevy patterns and BOP patterns.

What vehicles would a person check in at a salvage yard to find a 2004r with chevy pattern and old enough to work with our speedos?
