Post 1 piece driveshaft in SWB

Oky a couple more questions, can I use a one piece driveshaft when I make my truck a SWB Does it help that I am going to go down 2" in the back ? thanks a confused 17 year old punk Trying to finish a big mans toy.

you can put one piece shaft in no matter what tranny you use, since you wil now have 115" wheelbase now. probably wil have to locate a shaft out of a donor vehicle of some kind and have it shortened and balanced
1 3/4" of bare slip yoke of the driveshaft should be sticking past the end of the tranny with the truck at level rest when it is the correct length, too short or too long will cause big problem

I think that 1 3/4" is a lot of bare slip yolk. I was told that they need 3/4" min-1" max travel.....slide the slip yolk into the trans till it bottoms,then mark it...pull it out 7/8",& measure center to center of the u joints from there. This info came from a driveline shop that has done several shafts for me. due to the differences in slip yolks(as to where the spline starts on the inside)measurements will vary,& its hard to get the proper depth by measuring the outside. Fast68 Chevy....dont veiw this as an arguement....many things I have learned the hard way,& this was one of them .Thats another story,& too long to type,(but it had both me & the driveline shop cussin).....69 longhorn.

i understand, i was going by what racers say and manuals say and such, but thats not always what you should go by in alot of cases 1 3/4" is roughly half the length of the yoke though.

ok, even though sites and manuals always say to set it so that 1 3/4" of the yoke showing- from what ive seen over the years i have gathered this info:

length of the slip yoke part of the yoke on 3 speed, 700r4, 4 speed car, th350 and th400 and th200/250, etc are 3 3/4" overall

and the amount of the yoke that is always shoved into the tail has been right at about 2 5/8" plus or minus 1/16"

thus leaving right at about 1 1/8" to show

if you shove too much of it in the tranny then youll end up bottoming the yoke into the tranny and hurting shaft or bushing or tailhousing or all of the above, the amount that you push in or leave showing really depends on what the truck is gonna be used for, if the suspension is gonna travle down far IE loading it down for work, then you dotn want too much shoved in, same deal if you lower truck, if the truck is gonna travel up IE have soft springs and rebound alot over bumps and such then you dont want too much showing or the yoke can come out of the tail, so,...

That does work on most apps,where I have seen the trouble come in is adapting non stock parts,& due to internal differences(some are counter bored for an O ring,some are not).......it was a 400T that gave me fits on shaft lenght. It was measured with a stock yolk.....then the yolk was replaced at the time the shaft was built. after much disscussion (also replacement of the slip yolk), it was explained to me to bottom the yolk,then pull it back 7/8" & measure from there. I just want to pass the info along,that all slip yolks are not the same. my problem was not a dissaster.....i caught it before the car was on the road......69 longhorn.
