tire size lift size
I recently bought a K5 with a 4" skyjacker spring lift and 35" BFG AT radials. It took me a while to get the rear pinion angle set correctly and now it drives vibration free. At this stage, I'm working on the frontend (CV joint, ball joints, wheel bearings).
I'm not real sure that I like the 35" tires and 4" lift. In hind sight I would have been happy with 31" tires and a 2" lift. My question is this, will it look stupid to run 31" tires and a 4" lift? How about 33" tires and a 4" lift? __________________ Regards, RLK 72 CST 4" Lift, 35" tires |

33" tires and 4" will look good- that's what I had before I went up, and I loved it! 31's are too small, and it just won't look too good IMO.
Let me make one suggestion- Keep the setup you have on for a little while. When I first bolted the 38s on mine, I HATED how it looked and was looking for smaller tires almost immediately. Now, a few months later I REALLY like them. The 35's may grow on you. Here are some 4" and 33 pics-

Those are some sharp looking rigs. Everyone says that 35" are too much for 1/2 ton running gear. I don't want to move up to 3/4 ton gear just to run 35 inchers.

35's are TOTALLY fine with 1/2 ton gear, even if you wheel hard. Whoever is telling you otherwise is being over cautious.
I think 35's are really the cutoff point; Anything beyond, and perhaps 3/4 ton gear should be a consideration. However, the D44/12 bolt/NP205 are a stout combination. I am running 38's on 1/2 ton gear, I have run 37's on a late model 1/2 ton IFS, and I ran 39s on my 82 with 10 bolts and a 208 and 3.08s (at least had an SM465 though)! Transfer case eventually went out, but that was it. Unless you put a high horse/torque engine in it and/or hardcore wheel, I think you will be fine with what you have, and others will agree with me. D44 + 12 bolt + NP205 + 35's + 3.73s = AOK

Thanks for all the comments. The truck does have 3.73s and feels plenty peppy with the 35s. When I get the front ball joints/cv shaft repaired I'll be back on the road. I do think I'll swap out the spicer 153s in the rear shaft for 785s.

Here's my '72 with 4" lift and stock 235/85R16 tires and my '69 with 6" of lift and 35's.
35's are pretty much considered the size limit for half ton running gear, but there are plenty of guys running bigger tires on stock running gear. Board member 2wblazer runs 38's or 39's on his and he does wheel it. I've seen trucks with 44's on half ton gear, but it doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I forgot to mention, my '69 has 4:10's. My first K5 had 4" lift and 35's with 3:73's. The '69 with the 4:10's has much more get-up-and-go off the line, but it gets terrible gas mileage (6-8mpg). My '72 has 3:07's. I plan to switch to 33's on the '72 when I have $. I want to get the stock wheels widened to keep the stock(ish) look.
