Please help with late model Q jet problem...
I picked up a "new" Holley rebuilt quadrajet from a board member and its not really what I was expecting. I was going to use it on my new motor but I don't know if I can or not. I'm not too well versed in late model Qjets but this appears to be a computer controlled carb. does anyone have any idea what the electrical connections are on this thing? Are they mixture controls or will it function without them being connected. I think one of the hookups is a throttle positioning sensor but I have no idea what the other one is. If they are just feedback circuits to the computer to control spark advance I assume I can use the carb as is. If they are mixture contol selenoids then I am screwed. Anyone have a guess? The numbers on the carb are

It looks like the standard connector for the computer-controlled Q-jet. It has electronic metering.

Deffinetly give it back! Those electronic feedback carbs suck even when they are on the proper vehicle.

Put an Edel on it and be done with it. Q-jets were the worst carb ever built. When I had my parts house, I had a carb rebuilder. He built carbs all day long, we had more Q-jet parts than any other carb. They were a pain to rebuild and a pain to get running right.

Iv'e had a dozen or more carters over the years and theyre good carbs but I'm building this more for mileage and the edelbrock ( carter ) is not as good as a spread bore quad in good tune for mileage. Obviosly this one isnt what I am looking for but Quads arent that hard to tune. Theyre not evil but theyre really not that difficult to work on either.

it will run, but those carbs are POS....I had a 83 cutlass for a while that had the computer controlled carb and dizzy, sh!tcanned the dizzy, put in a regular HEI and disconnected the wires from the carb, the electronics control the fuel suply to the primary jets, but when they have no power to them, the fuel is wide open.
It will run, but you won't be happy with the performance of it.....my advise is to get rid of the carb, and go with a correct QJ, or edelbrock.

Depends on want you want, and how much you like to work on carbs. The only thing different about that carb is it had a computer controlled enrichment circut to make up for the fact the to pass emissions they ran them so lean they would barley run. You can make it work on a "regular" motor and it even has one advantage. First the air valve has a stop that must be ground off to get full airflow. From the looks of that picture it might have allready been done. Second that carb has an adustment on the metering rods for adjustment that is pretty cool. I would stick it on your motor and see how it runs. From the looks of the picture it has been modified, I don't think it is legal for Holley to sell a computer controlled carb in that condition will all the anti-tamper plugs removed. Check out this link it might help.
