I have a 6cyl, but which one?
Hey,
New 'round these parts. I just bought a "new" '68 C-10 stepside. It has one of the (3) inline 6's that came with this particular year, but I can't seem to figure out the displacement of the engine. Is there anything in particular I can look for? I know it's the original engine and it looks like the original 1-barrel carb as well. 99.9% of the truck is stock. Oh - and I've noticed that some people are really sensitive about posting the VIN # of their vehicles online, why is that? Pics of my new toy: |

Nice truck. Your's is OLMG (old lady mint green, my pet name for that color) just like my 67 C10. You will most likely have a 250 cu in 6 under the hood. Look at the passenger side of the engine. It will be a 250 if it is front to back; distributor, fuel pump, motor mount. A 292 will be distributor, motormount, fuel pump. I'm not sure about the vin number deal. To me it isn't a big deal, but it is like the social security number of the truck.

Thanks for the quick respons, guys. I put some pics of the engine above if it helps.
The truck is knocking somewhere in the lower frontend of the engine. Sounds like it's coming from near the crankshaft. I'm thinking it's either spun a bearing or something or maybe the harmonic balancer. It's a very rhythmic knocking sound, really deep. There's no metal shavings in the oil, so I'm not thinking it's very serious. Auto Zone's website is showing the 6cyl's as : 6 Cylinders 230 3.8L 1BL 6 Cylinders 250 4.1L 1BL 6 Cylinders 292 4.8L 1BL I really need to get a Hayne's manual or something for it. It's one of the only things that didn't come with the truck (it's missing the factory radio and has two aftermarket Pioneer speakers in it, it also has over-the-shoulder seatbelts also). I've got some more questions also. I'm pretty confused about the document in the glove box. It looks like it's inconsistent. I'll post about it in another thread. |

stock, if it wasnt mentioned on the sticker, should be a 250. IIRC the 230 was not available in '68, and the 292 would be listed as optional. however...things change.
btw, that is one sharp truck...I like it!

I want to repaint it some colour other than granny-green, so ... Such a dilemma - keep it stock or mod/rod it out? Tough call.... |

What ever you do, DO NOT get a rebuilt engine from AutoZone if you plan on replacing it. To erratic in their quality. I'm living with their aftermath in my 82, Very nice truck.

Looks like a 250. To confirm look for the casting number on the passenger side of the block. Should bo on the lower portion, usually just aft of the motor mount. You're looking for raised letters. Go to www.inliners.org under casting #s.

Shifty, That is one nice looking truck. Not to many 6 cyls in that great a condition. I would be concerned about that knock though. Lack of metal shavings just means they could be hiding in the filter. Suggest you disconnect the water pump to verify that's not it. I also notice a black spot under the 2nd port on the exhaust manifold. Could be an exhaust leak making that noise as well.

Auto Zone is wrong on there engine listings...and who measures inlines in liters? You'll learn that place sucks when you are dealin with old verhicles.
Like already mentioned, there were only 2 inline engines offered 67 - 72, the 250, and the 292. Asuming to be original, if the glove box SPID sticker has no engine listed, then it'll be a 250. That is one sweet lookin truck. 68's are sweet, short step trucks are awsome...and IMO, that color kicks tail on that truck. No, it wouldn't have been my first choice, however, after seeing it, I think I would put it back in teh same color...but that's just me. I doubt that thing had a frame off, the firewall is painted black on yours, and if it was removed from the frame, then they woulda (shoulda anyways) done it in body color like GM did. Either way, that is a sweet lookin rig that I would be proud to have staining my driveway. you have any interior pics? The VIN thing is kinda real, kinda BS. Thieves and crooks are getting smarter and they have computers. If they have your vin, and the right connections, they can fabricate a title for your truck and claim it to be there's. However, i don't think it has ever happened. Sounds too much like an urban legond to me. SOme ppl are afraid to post there license plates on line too. Most states have privacy laws making info rather hard to obtain...besides, you want my address? 'll give it to you. take my truck...my neighbor will probably shoot you. Looks just like the 250 in my 67,and the one in my brothers 69,so I'd say it's a 250.It's not a 292.Like mentioned the fuelpump is behind the motormount on a 292.

Hey that truck looks somewhat familiar to me. Of course maybe that's because mine is a short stepside with a 250 also. Unfortunately for me, mine is in nowhere near as good shape as yours is.

Looks Just Like The I6 250 In My 67 Gmc. 1 Barrel Carb And All. I Need To Mount My Ignition Coil In Mine Po Didn't Use One. Can You Take A Picture Of It On Your Truck So I Can See How It Is Mounted. What Kind Of Braket Did The Use Thanks And Very Nice Truck Wish My 67 Was That Nice.

The easiest way to tell is to look at the motor mounts. A 250 mounts are straight across from each other, 292 are off set from each other.

That is either a 230 or a 250. The lifter covers on a 292 are 6" tall, and the ones on a 230/250 are around 4" like your's. The deck height on a 292 is much tall to accomodate the long 4 1/8" stroke.

I just noticed it is a non-A/C truck, but you have the glovebox liner for a truck WITH A/C. Noth hurting anything, but you lost a little storage space.
On a happier note, that is one good looking truck.

I would like to steal the A/C from another truck, if possible. A/C is on the list of things to buy in the future. This thing came with nothing No PS No PB No A/C No tilt But best of all - no excessive rust It sure did come with a lot of miles though :p |
