4x4 question
Today I installed my 4x4 axles and put on my rotors and spindles on the front end. When I spin the "dealy thing" (don't know what it is called
 ), only the left axle spins. If I spin the right axle by hand, the "dealy thing" doesn't rotate. Why does the left but not the right axle engage when the "dealy thing" is spun? Thanks for the help if you have any idea what I am talking about.

It's an open differential. They do that.
Or, your talking about the axle shafts w/ the small u-joint, if so then the hub is not engaged on the right. What year truck and axles?

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

yeah that's it....... I have a '72 chevy k20....so it's supposed to do that on the front end?

sounds like your hub on the right side is now locking in.

It's not necesarily a hub. He did mention axle and not tire. A good way of testing it is by locking in both hubs. Have someone hold your left tire while you turn your driveshaft. Your right tire should turn. Then do the oppostie by holding your right while you turn your driveshaft and your left should turn. If you see you axke shaft turning but not the tire then yes it would be a hub. If nothing is turning I would pop that diff and check it out.

I don't have my hubs installed yet (I am actually looking for a good used pair or even maybe a single), but I have everything else installed up to that point. Once again, I spin my driveshaft and only the left axle spins. If I spin my right axle by hand only the driveshaft turns. Is it supposed to do this, sounds to me like I only have 3 wheel drive? Thanks.....John

That's how they work. When one tire is on the ground and one is in the air. Only the one in the air will spin. SO unless you have a locker in the rear, you truely only have 2wd and any given time.
