New here...just bought this truck last weekend...
If I'm doing something wrong with this post and the pictures please let me know. I'm a new member so I don't quite have the hang of this place yet.
This C20 Camper Special has the original 396 two-barrell L-66 with only 42,000 miles. I've been reading the posts and getting ideas about what I might want to do to it but I'm sure it will say very close to stock. It has some cool options--including pinstriping, TH400, overloads. The paint isn't really great and it has a lot of undercarriage surface rust from sitting outside, but the cab is solid. The wood bed is rotted but I have a steel one from another truck I'll replace it with when I repaint it. I hate to see that original pinstriping go but I've got my heart set on the LeMans Blue that was on a '68 396 Camaro I use to own. I might not be able to reply as quickly as I'd like to but I will eventually.. Here's some pics, including the build sheet... |

Welcome. Interesting truck. Couple of things. I know they made 2bbl 396's but never seen one in a truck.
Does it have a manual or automatic choke carb? Also, it has a manual throttle which is unique. Also it says "special paint". It looks like the stock vermillion color. Finally, the hood is missing the CHEVROLET lettering. Has the hood been repainted?

I already changed the old canister oil filter to a spin-on with an adapter but I will change out the rear-end oil this weekend too. The manual throttle wasn't connected but it wasn't broken either--I think PO did it on purpose for safety reasons. I'm not sure about the paint code either--it has three numbers in the build sheet list: D89 Paint Stripe, 599 Special Paint, 1001 Special Paint. Any clues? The CHEVROLET letters for the hood were in the glove box. PO said he was going to buff the paint and might have taken them off for that...not really sure. |

Sweet old 68 you have there! That's my kind of truck.
I like that original paint color. What's listed on the glove box for paint color? That might give more of a clue than what's listed on the build sheet. That thing's got some goodes. "Custom" package, Paint stripe (I'm partial to that option!) 396BB and Custom Camper equipment to name a few. Hang on to those chrome hub caps. They are pretty unusal/rare on the 68's.

Welcome to the board from Kent, WA! Great looking '68. Can you take a closeup of the hub caps since that is the same option as on my '68 and I am looking for some. Also let me know if those wheels have clips to hold the hub caps on and if they are split rims since that is the same R68 option as my truck.
I would leave it stock if I were you...but on the other hand a lowered big block truck with everything shaved is pretty cool! If you choose to go that way I would be interested in the caps since my '68 is going to be a pure stock resto. Great find at only 42,000 miles!

I know everyone around this board is into lowering but this truck will be used to tow horse and car trailers and might have to get into some uneven terrain every once in a while. I'm thinking of putting in a 2" body lift and some 31x10.50 tires on those wider rims. What do you think about that look? Have you seen any like that on this board? |

My old roommate in college had a 72 3/4 ton lwb with 12x16.5's and it looked great. Lifting it a bit will look great and the 10x16.5's look plenty big enough to fill those wheel wells. I think it will look great! My '72 Longhorn has 10x16.5's on the front and I think it looks great too. My '68 Longhorn I am trying to do a 100 pt restoration so may have to go with the original split rims and wheel clips for the hubcaps. If your wheel option was R68 and those are original that pretty much means that mine would have come with the same thing.
R68 750x16x8 N T. Could you check your build sheet and see it that is what you have on the truck? It sounds like maybe someone changed them to 16.5's. Sorry, I just re-read your post. You said you have some OTHER 16.5 split rims...so does that mean that the ones on your truck are 16's and not split rims? Thanks

Thanks...that answers my question, unfortunately. That means if I want to do a 100 pt. restoration I am going to have to use 16-in. split rims. I was hoping that would not be the case. Maybe I will just leave the split rims for the shows and run some wider tires for the street...LOL!

Man, that's nice! There is one just about like it just down the street from me, and I've been thinking it would make a nice companion piece for my Panel.
The one down street from me has more of a cream colored nose, though. Maybe that's the difference on that 'special paint' code?

catseye, Keep the wooden bed they are really cool when done properly and really give the truck a nostalgia feel. I could not bring myself to replace my wood bed...no way!

Wow, Thanks for all the great words you guys, I can tell I'm gonna make some good friends here. I browsed around a bit and ALL your trucks are cool.
Some answers to your questions: I have another '68 CST C-10 that I'll take the metal bed out of for practicality, but I'd never get rid of the wood bed unless I sell it with the truck. I might part out the C-10 when I'm sure I don't need anything else off it. The wood bed on the C-20 has some rust on the stringers and would need a full sandblast/dismantle but I'll save that for a snowy winter project in the PNW. Oh, the glove box paint code is a little different from the ones on the rap sheet. It reads "91001MC Special Paint". Still confused about all the different codes on this thing. Also, there is a code on the glove box sheet without a description that reads, "04Z62H" Can anyone help me decode that? Also, does anyone have any pictures of wheel/tire combo 16.5x8.25 w 31x10.50 they could pass along? I think I want to do a little prerunner look with that size tire and a two inch lift. If someone has that setup I'd love to see some pics. |
