fender welt or not?
Never reassembled a stepside and was wondering what the preference was on fender welt. It didn't have any when I took it apart but thats not to say that it hadn't just rotted away. Need some of you stepside guys experience. I got some in the last order I got but not sure if I should use it. Whats the pros and cons.
Thanks Solver

There is no welt (as in the little bead thing) that goes between the fender and the box. There is a material called GM Strip Caulk that does go between the flange and the box however. You can purchase it at you local body shop.

It's actually "3M strip caulk" and that's what I have used and then just trim off the excess. I plan to assemble my 67 with strip caulk and then have the underside of the fenders sprayed black with something like Rhinoliner to give the protection of rock dings.

I just recently learned the fender welt wasn't used on these from hanging out here. Seeing it in Chevy duty catalog, I figured that's what it had originally so I used it.
It looks good when installed but I think I will switch to the strip caulking for better sealing. The fender welt doesn't do a very good job of sealing that area IMO.

The fender welt is a waste of time and money and looked like crap when installed IMO.

I don't know how much the strip caulk seals...seems like it should if applied properly but it does keep down the noise from vibration that some have complained about.
