transfer case leaking

ive got a np205 in my 79' k20 and there seems to be oil coming out of the breather tube on top of it,almost like it is building up preasure some how.any ideas on what would be causing this?there is also a rattle/vibration that travels up through the transfer lever,if you move the lever a bit the noise goes for a short period of time.could this be bearings?

It's possible that you have a bad seal between the trans and the transfer, thus making the transfer case overfilled. The rattle is usually the linkage, mine rattles some also.

Yeah, my lever for my 205 rattles too so I would not worry about that. But that is weird that fluid is coming out of the breather line? I don't have any suggestions, but it sounds like it is building up pressure some how?

Mine does the exact same thing as yours. I have not gotten around to fix it yet, but i did stop my the transmission shop that I use for everything because he is one of the best, and he told me the same thing that kwmech said. He said it is a known problem that happens from time to time. My buddies truck did the same thing, and now mine is as well. Looks like I will have to pull the transfer case and replace the seal. I checked my fluid as well, and it was full, but not like way overfull, has something to do with all the pressure inside and stuff. The longer I let the truck set before I check it, the less full it is, must somehow get back into the tranny some, the rest that doesn't make it back just flies out and all underneath it making a serious mess. I really have to do somethign about it real soon, I am tired of seeing all the oil under there. Good luck.
