Door lock problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Whenever I lock my doors on my 70 then close them they unlock and I have to use the key. Why is it doing this and how can I fix it?

You do know that you have to hold the button in when you close it, right?

yeah thats a standard feature from back then isnt it? i recall some of the older cars you had to hold the button in or handle up when you closed the door to keep it locked. I thought that was standard but wasn't sure myself.

Yeah, that was standard on old stuff but I just checked my truck to make sure and when I held the button in it still unlocked

Thats the way they work. You have to lock them with the key.

hmm, now that i think about it, i've had to lock it with the key no matter what. i figured that was normal. perhaps you have to upgrade the locking mechanism?

yupp they all have to be locked with the key, when you close it they pop back up ive never seen one stay locked on these trucks

Think of the good news though, you can't lock your keys in the truck with these trucks.

The trick of holding the handle or button when closing only works on newer cars, especially imports. There was a big explanation on this one in a post right around the time I jumped on the forum (this question gets posted almost as much as the "what gear ratio do I got?!" thread

)

Noo=ne here has Read there owners manual ?

The door locks are designed that way so you (or wife) can't ever lock the keys in the car. Kinda a pain but there is a good reason behind it.

Actually, a lot of older cars had this feature. I had a 68 Cutlass and could hold the button down on the handle, press down the lock button, and close the door to lock it.

My bad! Not trying to spread misinformation. My '70 Impala had to be locked using the key also, I just figured most of the 66-72 era GM cars and trucks were the same.
