Backing plates "grooved". What to do?
Pulled the drums on the rear of the Burb today to do the rear brakes. The backing plates are really grooved from where the shoes were riding against them. What should I do? Can I get new ones? Should I fill the groove with the MIG and grind it smooth? Any other suggestions? I will have to put axle seals in soon so I want to get this part done & over with.

I don't think I'd do anything with them. That's very common and has never caused my any problems.

I had some grooves on a couple of the pads on the backing plates on my '56 wagon. I welded them and ground them smooth. Turned out pretty good.

I think I will weld them up. These are grooved real bad, to the point that the shoes are hanging up on them. Not safe, parked it.

I also welded mine about 2 months ago. Seemed to work well.
