Pinging or a tink tink tink noise, like a small hammer hitting my tranny
I hear it when i shift into reverse or drive, and it seems to sometimes make itself known while i'm actually driving down the road. It goes away when i let go of the gas. I remember someone asking about this long ago and I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice or point me in the right direction.
It's a 69 GMC 2wd 350 with a TH-400. Any help would be appreciate and thank you in advance.

first thing i would do is check the flywheel to see if its loose or cracked usually around the bolt circle and also check the converter bolts

A bad U-joint could be a possibility also. They sometimes make some strange sounds that echo through the driveline.

Might be the Carrier Bearing. Sometimes they make noises.

Check u-joints first , then, if it's still there, take off dust shield and check torque converter bolts, they may be backing out.

I'd say check that tranny out fast! I had the same thing happen, and about 100 miles down the road my tranmission was reduced to metal fragments.

If it's one or 2 loud "tinks" when you are shifting between drive and reverse, then I'd almost assure you its U joints. They get play in them, make a loud tink that sounds tinny like thru the driveshaft. When you shift to reverse you load it one way, drive the other way and it really brings the noise out. Have it on my car right now, drive shaft is coming out tomorrow......
