I finally have it, my '72 swb project

I found a '72 swb custom deluxe project. It does not have a motor/tranny in it currently, so I want to get in there and clean up all the rust on frame and other metal pieces. I was planning on sanding the rust off my self (electric circular sander when possible) and then using a zero-rust spray on it, then a black flat paint. Is this the best way to go, or does anyone have a better suggestion?

It is as good as any of them. I did mine with rust convertor and Rustolium. Which ever coating method you use, just make sure you clean off everything the very best you can before you apply your protective coating. Sounds like your doing like me, not a frame off, so get the wire brushes and drill roto wheels and get er done. It'll look good when you are finished.

I'm doing the frame off route right now with mine and media blasting is the way I'm going for cleaning up the parts. I might be done in 10-15 years at the rate it seems it is going. For me working on my truck is my down time between work and the honey do list. I'm also building my truck to trailer around a 63 impala SS convertable. I want to be able to put the truck in the show right beside the 63' so I don't have vehicles parked all over.

Does it have PS? Looks like it has the good stuff. Tilt wheel? Nice hub caps. Excellent deal and you now know what you will be doing for the next whatever months.

Haven't used it myself, but I have heard a lot of good things about POR-15. You can put it on with a brush. I think I'm gonna use it on my frame if I ever get to it.... Maybe someone who has used it will reply......

I like por-15. I have used it on my frame and other parts. It is expensive, but worth it.

Tomatocity, yep, it does have PS. If you are interested in the hub caps, then PM me an offer. I was going to take them to a swap meet next month in Ft. Worth.

I used POR-15 on a 1962 Impala SS and I guess it worked since I never saw any rust again. POR stands for Paint On Rust so if you are going to use it don't clean the surface before painting it on. A friend painted a non-rusty frame for a Model T and all he had was an expensive paint job. The POR-15 bonds to the surface using the rust as part of the bonding material. As POR says 'rust don't sleep'.

No don't sell the hubcaps! Those are great wall ornaments. Guess have been single to long.

Yes, I want to do exactly what you have done to your truck. What kind of rust converter did you use. Is this a rattle-can spray on? Did you use black gloss Rustolium or some special kind?

Talking I did some work

Well, I got in there and cleaned up the area for the engine to go in. I used engine cleaner and wire brush to knock off all the mudd and crudd. Then I sprayed on rust-oleum rust reformer, and topped that with rust-oleum satin enamel finish. Once I get engine in I am going to move it home and start taking everything else off, and restoring the same way.

If it were me (and it has been many times) I would go for the por 15 in a chassie black. My self I clean all the rust off that wants to come off first. What you do not want is a clean shiny frame. Por 15 recomends if you are using it on new metal to let it surface first then paint it. Trust me this work great. The last 4x4 trailer I built got the por 15 treatment but not until I hosed the frame off each morning before work for a few days! Yes it is expensive but it goes a long way. Just make sure you do not get it on your skin or it will take a few weeks to wear off
