Problem with the charging system...
I've just about given up here.. My blazer has been driving me nuts lately. I've had to disconnect the battery to keep it from draining overnight. It hasn't been charging the battery much (if at all) either, but it will run fine without the battery hooked up. I've noticed that when I connect the battery, it sounds like the contacts in the voltage regulator are closing. It doesn't matter if the ignition is on or off. There is a loud click coming from the reg itself. I've replaced the voltage regulator with no improvement. The new one does the same thing. Could my problem be in the guage itself? What else is there? The battery is brand new. I just replaced it last weekend. I'd appreciate any help I can get here!!!

Consider going with an interal regulated alt.

Possible short? To test for a short, with key off, insert a test light between the positive terminal on the battery and the disconnected positive battery terminal clamp. If the test light comes ON there is a short in the electrical system that is draining the battery.

there's definitely a short. What boggles me is that the VR (old one and new one) will get hot overnight if I leave the battery hooked up. Does anybody here know how this circuit actually works? What causes the coils to close the contacts in it?

Your problem sounds like your alt. Unhook the red wire at alt. and see if battery stays up.

Agree with Jhow66, you could have shorted windings in the alt. That's probably why your regulator "clicks" everytime you connect your battery.
