performance from a souped 350

How good would a 67-72 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 with a rebuilt, mildly souped up small-block 350 go? By mild, it would probably have a Edelbrock performer kit (carb, cam, intake and lifters), K&N air-filter, Chevy ram-horn exhaust manifolds go? They they claim the performer combo makes 320 hp and 382 ft. lbs of torque , which seems like an ideal kit for a truck, because the tests showed at 2,000 rpm, it makes around 345-350 ft.lbs of torque. Good for serious wheelin'. Does anyone on here run dual exhaust stacks right behind the cab, up through the bed floor? I am seriously considering having two stainless steel exhaust stacks right behind the cab and throught the bed, just to be different and to look cool.

What I'd do for sure is get some good cylinder heads your performance will allways be limmited to the cylinder heads. You can get some good factory castings and have some material removed from the bottom to bump the compression up a bit. Otherwise look for some aftermarket heads. The performer kit is a nice kit to use but keep in mind it is designed to work with the performer heads also so it's not going to achieve the same results on a crummy factory cast headed engine. My 355 runs real good and it's nothing special real good low end power and pulls hard to 5K. what it is a 4 bolt 350 bored .030 decked, 882 cast heads heads w/ 2.02/1.60 .020 shaved off the bottoms, Comp EX 4X4 cam, Edlebrock EPS intake 600CFM carb, full length headers, unilite ignition. Never had it dynoed but I'd say it's an honest 290-300HP and 350-370 FT. Lbs of torque with a real flat torque curve peaking at 3500 or so. With 4.10's and 33 inch tires this truck has all kinds of power and it fun as heck to drive

You describe what is basically in my Chevy, 350, crower cam, aluminum intake, ram horns. Don't have much top end with the 4.56 gears and 35" tires. Have no problem keeping the RPMs up though. You thinking manual or auto tranny? Both my have manuals.

We ran a piece of 3" heavy wall pipe for a stack on our '69 C-10 farm truck so we could rake corn stalks in the fall pulling a wheel rake with it(You know, when it is 20 degrees out and we didn't have a cab tractor at the time)............With the 250 I-6 it would just cackle on a hard pull!

I am going to run a 5" chrome stack with a heat sheild modified off a Pete on my '71 C-20, and my brother plans on running something similar on his C-10 when he gets it done........IMO though a V-8 through a stack sounds like SH*T. I-6's sound much better, especially if they are diesel.

I don't know what SB 350's you guys are running, but I was never in a truck that had one that really impressed me..........They run like crazy if you keep them cranking rpm wise, but pull them down and you mine as well put a sign on the back window, "Out for Lunch"............My neighbor had a 383 in a later model 3/4 ton and even that didn't impress me, and the 383's were supposed to be the "Holy Grail" in the torque department...........I'll stick to what I know makes torque best

Jim,
I was going to go with a granny gear four-speed, but I changed my mind and decided to get a floor-shift auto. I really didnt want a three speed because that's essentially what the granny gear 4-speed tranny is in traffic.

Hard to beat a SM465, that's what I have in both mine. Old granny comes in handy when loaded or when you want to creep along.
