I called the local GM dealer today about stepside tailgates. They can still get them for $350.00. Would this be a better purchase than a reproduction tailgate(250-280)? Let me know which one you would buy for your truck and why.

I have always heard that a guy my size (6'1" 225) and up would
warp a repro by sitting on it, just what I have heard, my $0.02,
I would always buy NOS if it were available, they fit better.

If the fundage is there, you'll never regret the OEM part over the POS overseas junk.

The last N.O.S.Stepside tailgate I bought was $50-60 from GM about 15 years ago.Sure went up.Stepside tailgates are all flimsey,even N.O.S.I don`t think Repros are as high as you say,are they?

Misscalculated, the repro tailgates are around 200-220.

Does anybody know for sure if the NOS are really stronger (better made) than the repros. Or is everyone brainwashed into thinking NOS is better.

Would like some facts on this and no he said she saids.

I don't have the GM part number handy to me tonight but run that part number on GM Parts Direct and see what the current list and cost is. I bought one about a year ago and it was around $215 body shop price.

PICKMUP has an NOS fleetside gate right next to a reproduction gate in his shop/store. The difference in weight is quite small (vis a vie, metal thickness) and the reproduction gate has cleaner lines and better spot welds. I hate to say it but it looks better and I wager it is just as strong. Having said that...I will still not trade my newly acquired Longhorn gate for one...LOL! Food for thought though if you are buying a new one!

In my experience with both oem parts and repops....the oem stuff is 100% better....weight between the two gate may be minimum difference but all that weight is in the gauge of the steel....jmho

I think it depends where the repop is coming from. I looked at a Dyncorn tailgate right out of the box and was a very high quality piece that I would not hesitate to buy. It had better and more welds than my OEM and felt every bit as heavy, if not heavier.

LMC nets a "repo" out at $259 plus freight. Hope this helps!

I would think the GM ones are repos in a GM box. I just dont think GM would have someone still punching out old tailgates.

the GM ones are NOS, they were made for the 73 - 87 trucks too.
