9 bolt rear end?

I have seen alot of articles in magazines about certain restos using a F@rd 9-inch rear end. What is the 9" referring to? Also what does a posi do for me that a non-posi do?

A 9 inch rear end is refering to the size of the ring gear. A 9 inch is comonly used by racers because it has larger pinion size and is generally stronger than a gm 12 bolt (here we go!) A posi rear end basically makes both tires push the truck instead of one tire. A must have item for high horsepower/torque engines.

no, it has a completely removable third member, we use them on our pro mods because you can change gears without setting up the back lash, etc, just unbolt it and put a different one on. They are fairly common and came under alot of fords. i have one under my 35, thought about doing it in my 68 also.

the late 70's lincoln Mark V's are the same width as the 71-72 12 bolts and you get disc brakes and with a little modding a parking brake that's incredible (aka i can't move my truck with it on) and they're the same bolt pattern
