Who has done this change over before?
It's the ol inline 6 swap to the 350 thing again. I figure if I'm gonna rebuild the engine and everything else, I might as well move the engine up to the V8 position. My questions is about the 3 spd tranny. I take it, it will have to be moved up as well, but what do you have to do to it. The shift linkages would be out and so would the driveshaft. I need some input on this problem.
Wondering if I should just hold off and get a 4spd and do it right. Any thought on this?

all you have to do is take the six out & put the 350 in you can even use the fly wheel of the six & put on the 8 you will need to get a differnt pivot for the clutch that goes on the side of the block if you are going with headers, other than that you should have no problems, the H.E.I. will be a very tight fit but it all can be done!

Yeah, that's if I drop my 350 on the inline stands, but what if I move the engine up to the V8 position?

Would you be looking for the truck 4spd or one of the sportier 4spds? If you get to The TwinCities area of MN I have a complete truck 4spd sitting in my machine shed right now. Came out of a 72 GMC C20.

You'll need sbv8 engine towers, a longer drive shaft (I've been told that its 59 1/2")and the pivot for the clutch that has been mentioned. I think it is called a Z-bar. I think you will also need the auto crossmember. I know you are going to run the 3 speed man. but when you move it up you will need the auto xmember to bolt to the tail of the tranny. You'll also have to remove the I6 tranny xmember of you are moving things up.

hey da-burb, i just live up here in St. Cloud.. and i just bought a 74 c10 2wd w /I6 and 3ontree... but would like some info on that 4sp you got int he shed... i dont know if i want to go there, this is a beater to pick up parts for my 70 and engine for the 84 olds, but then i am an addict and would like the creeper gear... any details??? thanks

I did my swap exactly like diggin69 said. I got some V8 stands from the salvage, mounted them to the engine, stabbed the engine, marked the bolt locations, pulled the engine and drilled the holes. Worked out great.

That V-8 will drop in you dont have to move anything & the motor mounts for the 6 will work you wont have to move anything or get V-8 mounts the only thing is if you go with a H.E.I it will be tight......but almost all the stuff you have know will work, even the fly wheel off the 6-banger.

I think I will more than likely stay with the V8 in the inline position. I will have the father in law, channel the firewall where the HEI sits. He's a Boilermaker/welder/mechanic, so he's kinda my ace in the hole when it comes to metal work and mechanical.

Hey Dubie
I did the I6 to SB V8 a couple of years ago. Used the I6 mounts, bell housing, clutch assembly, starter & rad. Only problem I had was converting the clutch linkage. Had to fabricate an engine pivot ball bracket for the "Z" bar. When using the I6 location the pivot ball mounting hole is about four inches too far back. The other only other problem you might have is connecting up the accelorator linkage to the carb. Also if you are using ram horn exhaust manifolds, get the ones with the straight down outlets. The angle back ones won't clear the clutch linkage on the driver's side. A lot of guys prefer the I6 location for the V8 as it sits lower and further back giving you better wait distribution and centre of gravity. Bob |

Dropped my 350 in where the six in a row sat, no problems, including the HEI.
