i made it from cal to florida with only a bad alternator and a radiator eating it, which isn't too bad considering...depends on the condition of your truck and how much prep you do before hand...
i'd invest/fabricate a starter heat shield, a CB isn't a bad idea either... how's the condition of your motor? tranny? brakes/lines? cooling system? tires? if there's some question whether you'll make it think about... get everything together before hand, cause there's a lot of empty road out there...

new carb, new 4 row raidator, new brke lines, new tires, new alternator, ummmm, at idle though my vacuum rteading is 15, upon revving it goes up to about 20 steady about 2000 rpms. umm, 4 speed granny tranny, might lose the front drive shaft, but it only annoys me any way (clacks a little). other then that my biggest fear is the motor going caput, or somthing coming undone. oh well, i have a bicycle on the back. peace Harry, departing at 930 pm eatern time

Carry plenty of rigging equipment.
After a few months of daily drivering my old Longhorn..including the pizza delivery gig, I decided to drive up to Fort Knox Ky from Ft Hood Tx. REAL BAD TRIP Had about 5 carb fires, one of them was huge killing my throttle retun spring (rigged with a bungee cord) burned 4 plug wires (rigged with RTV) burned fuel line and vac lines (all re-created out of duct tape) Killed the air filter, (who needed it anyways) and melted the dist cap a little. (again..RTV) Then there was the blown head gasket... Discovered a chipped valve...(wasn't like that when I left Tx) Discovered my timing chain was floppier than a puppy dog's ear... had a flat. I think that was all...it's been a few years. Oh yeah, had to J.B. weld the tank back on my rad somewhere in Memphis when it blew up. (do NOT stop at that exit...real scarey place) Just be prepaired. Cary a FIRE EXTINGUISHER...And know how to use it. I second the C.B., but if your on the side of the road, the truckers won't answer you. (it took 1 1/2 hrs to get an answer...and traffic was heavy) Any and every fluid your truck takes, carry plenty of extra. 5 gallonsd of water is NOT overkill. Good luck and give us a heads up as soon as you can. |

You'll do just fine,these old truck are tougher then most think.And if it does break down just have a good time fixing it because you will be laughing later when you get there,so no use loosing the temper.Have a great trip and good luck...................James

Yeah. Loosein your temper never helps anything. Usually somthing just breaks when you do that so you have to loose it even more.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it up there....but check all of your lights/turn signals as well. Take a small toolbox with the essentials, take a case of oil, 5 gallons of water, make sure you have a jack, an aired up spare, cell phone would be a good idea as well. Maybe a belt or 2, if you have any extras around. Check all the wheels, make sure the nuts are tight, just little stuff like that. Change your oil before you leave, check all fluids.

im here, stopped in louisiana for a few days to see my family and take care of some personal business, also picked up a flat bed trailer that can hold one opf our trucks, towed my car back on it. about to go to bed.....only problem i had is that my transfer case is blowibng out fluid, where the 4x4 shifter goes into it. dont understand all the bolts are tight.
