79 chev c20 4x4 question

Hi i am buying a 1979 chevy c20 4x4 and have a question. It had a 400 motor in it and still has the th400 in it. My question is with that engine and tranny combo does it have the np 205 t-case in it?

Thanks
Brian

it could have an NP203, or it could have an NP205. a C20 shouldnt have a transfer case at all though, C20s are 2wd. K20s are 4wd.

full time = 203 part time = 205. check the stick. one will have 2 WD and 4 WD, the other will have drive and neutral. something like that.

79 was still full time 4wd time....as a general rule of thumb thats not allways correct....half and 3/4 tons came with 203's...1 tons allways got the dana 60 fronts and np205's. GM did a weirdo in 80....all K5's came with 205's....regardless across the board....before that usually a standard trans allways got the 205...but like i said there has been some weirdness out there such as one my friend in phx bought....79 1 ton crew cab...ex gov rez truck....straight 6/ th400/ np203...

Easy way to figure it out without cleaning crud looking for the tag in the case is to look at the rear of the case....if there is a small metal plate with three bolts between the output shaft on the top and the case cover on the bottom you have a np205....and the most desirable stough version ava. For pics cruise over to offroaddesign.com....steve has a whole page over there with pics....
