changing valve springs
I am trying to change valve springs with the head on the engine and the engine in the Blazer. The new springs are so stiff that i cant hold down the spring compressor and put on the o ring valve guide seal. I would like to use the umbrella type seal so that i could eliminate this problem. But i heard that you cant use this type seal with stock diameter valve spring cause it will hang-up on the damper. Does anyone know if this is true? Also if you use the umbrella seal, do you eliminate the oil splash shield? Please help. I am planing on racing this weekend.
Randy

youre not gonna want to get the spring keepers off with the heads on the engine cuz if you do then the valve will drop down and into the combustion chamber and thne youre screwed and wil have to pull the heads off the engne anyways,
they make inexpensive air fitting to screw into the spark plug hole to pump air into cylinder to hold valves up and sealed to the seats so they wont drop into the cylinder, you better get the fitting and do that or....... you can use 1967-69 Z28 umbrella style stem seals and 250 engine valve seals work also, keep in mind that you need at least a little oil getting to th stems or youl be wearign down stems and guides sooner than normal. while youre at it, Id put on some replacement 67-69 Z28 springs too, nice lil upgrade for the valve train, get them valves to shut quicker and hold shut tighter. hope you have hardened valve seat heads(72 and newer) good luck Last edited by Fast68Chevy; 08-24-2002 at 09:40 AM. |

the reason i'm changing my valve springs is cause im upgrading to Crane Cams springs 99848 and retainers and new locks. The compressed air is already in place and i'v had two springs off. I think im gonna go to the auto parts store and by some umbrella type seals.
