Difference between Fleetside & Long Bed
I was going to get a truck cover for my 69 Chevy Custom Camper 3/4 ton. On the order form it says is it a Long bed or Fleetside? Whats the difference between them?
Thanks. Truck69. |

Thats really kind of funny.
Usually a bed is referred to with two designations: A Long Wheelbase or longbed (LWB) means an 8 ft. long bed as compared to a short wheelbase or short bed (SWB)(6 ft. bed) or a Longhorn (special 8.5 ft. bed) And fleetside is a smooth-side bed as opposed to a stepside bed where the fenders are on the outside of the bed sides. Honestly I wouldnt know why they put a choice between the two you listed, unless it had to do with the "Camper" part...

They messed up on the horder form there...
you can have a fleet suide that is a long bed or short bed. (most actually say long wheel base/short wheel base) you can also have a step side bed in short or long.... The length, is obviouse...the long one is longer....8 foot verses 6 1/2 feet on 67 - 72 trucks. (excluding one tons and longhorns) Step side verses fleet side, if it has external fenders, and a narrow box, it is a step side. If the wheel wells are seen inside the box, and the bed sides are smooth and lined up with the cab...it is a fleet side. |

hmmm, you typed faster than I did.
The camper part of his truck is nothting more than HD shocks, springs, tires and a front sway bar. Being a 3/4 ton though, it is a long wheel base truck, no SWB were done in 3/4 ton. |

Just to really throw you a curve. If you're talking to a Candian. We often refer to them as " short boxes or long boxes". We used to call french fries "chips" like the English do as in " Fish & Chips" but since McDondals arived here some 30 yrs ago there marketing quys have pretty much changed that. Damn their corporate mind control brainwashing.......ooops, I'm ranting..

Alot of people think swb means short wheel base and not short wide bed. So,they`ll say swb Fleetside, swb Stepside,or snb Stepside.I can see the confusion. And,you stillknow what they mean. But,I`ve seen trucks decribed as swb then come to find they are Stepsides.

We`ve always described short Fleetsides as swb. Most people aren`t familiar with manufacture`s labels.Like mistaking calling GMCs Fleetsides or Ford and Dodges called Stepsides.Or,for that matter`88-ups being mistakingly called Stepsides. Most people are not that specifically informed or technical and calling them this is the simplest way to handle it.Using swb as short wide bed is easiest since it is specific and works for all brands. It`s no big deal and there`s no official book on it.It`s easy enough to figure out either way.I know swb can stand for short wheel base, but when body-style is being discussed...

I editted it.I hope it`s more clear now.Stepside is a GM name like StepVan.Dodges were called Utilines and Fords were Flaresides. The GMC widebeds were call Widesides.A Dodge was a Styleside or Styleline and Ford...uh I ran out of info......
(I used to think swb meant single white bimbo )
