700R4 Swap Succesful!!!
I had the TH400 swapped out for a 700R4 and it has been the best money spent on my truck so far. Stepping up to power brakes comes in a close second! I suggest to everyone to have the swap done. I will have some pics soon.

What year 700R4 did you use? What does it take to swap out one of these. Have you checked you fuel mileage yet? Look forward to the pictures. I have been thinking of doing this but at a latter date. Too much going on right now with a daughter getting married and all.$$$$$

Having that extra gear sure is nice isn't it? Especially with the steep gears some of these trucks had.

I havent done this on my 72 yet, but I did it on my 70 Nova and I had to move the X-member back, I believe that the trans lines are the same from T-400 and T-350 locations on the housing to the radiator, shorten the driveshaft(s), and then the obvious linkage issues.
On my Nova, the stock stamped/curved linkage arm wasnt long enough to engage 1st gear, so on our trucks, I dont know what the linkage issues are as of yet... Thats my 2$...

The Lokar linkages are perfect to use on our trucks. They also allow you to un the exhaust over the trans crossmember with out the linkage being in the way.

I did this swap, from a th350 short tail shaft to a 700r4, just moved the crossmember back and sent the driveshaft out to be shortened in my
1971 GMC 1/2 ton LWB. I had a 12 bolt rear with 4:10 gears and went from 8mpg on the highway to 15mpg, definitely worth it. In my current project I am using a gear vendors overdrive setup since I do not trust the 700r4 to stand up to towing use |

Pictures will come soon. I had a reputable shop intown do the work for me. I traded my tranny and some coin for the 700r4. He installed it 4 me including shortening the shaft, misc parts and pieces, and even threw in a 12 month warranty. He did a great job too. I have a push button switch for TC lock up, but I am going to replace it with a momentary switch using a holding circuit through the brake pedal switch to disengage the TC when I hit the brake.

I'm doing it to my 71 4x4 right now. It is going to run me about $2200. But is is worth every penny. I did it to a 72 4x4 I had and loved it. You have to move the trans mount the transfer case mount. You also have to add length to the front shaft and shorten the rear shaft. I'll hook the lock up converter to my brake. Adding the 4th gear was wonderful as well as the low first gear I can take off faster than ever before.

I think you can buy a pressure switch to install in the trans that will lock the TC at a certain pressure. Greg

Bowtie overdrives sells a kit for about 70 bucks to lock up the TC, it also has a switch that you connect to your brakes to unlock it. I'm going to get a new rebuilt tranny from them and get thier kit in a few months.
I can vouch for the brake switch as being needed. I only had a pressure lock up switch on my 700R4 and I had to slam the brakes on my 67 to miss a deer. I missed the deer but in the process the engine died and I lost my brakes. Power brake trucks take forever to stop without the engine running!
