Re: carrier bearing question
Well it sounds like your doing something wrong, either installing it wrong or buying from the wrong place. Describe what you did when taking the old one off and installing the new one.

Re: carrier bearing question
It sounds right to me (the installation), maybe a bad bearing. The rubber should be there just for shock absorption.

Re: carrier bearing question
I ditched those stupid metal shields when I replaced mine...........They looked like they were going to rub so I tossed them.
So far this year I've put in two carrier bearings..............Cummins is not fond of the stock '71 driveshaft/u-joints/carrier bearing...........I am getting a heavier duty setup made at the moment.

Re: carrier bearing question
When you put in the driveshaft, install the hanger bolts loosely, then tighten rear u bolts on the joint on the rear end. Go back to the hanger bearing and insure that the metal part is centered on the rubber before tightening, also insire the the metal support is at a right angle to the drive shaft, may have to bend the mount on the frame to get it square.
If you tightened the hanger bearing down first and the attached the rear, you will likely pull the shaft into the hanger rubber and burn it up.
