Vin Number on the frame?

I'm going to look at a K20 rolling chassis in the morning. Its supposed to be a 70 or 71 but the guy that found me the truck can't remember what year it is. Is there a vin or model number stamped in the frame somewhere so i know what this thing actually is, there is no body on it at all.

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

yes the vin number is stamped on the driver side frame rail at the front of the frame rail facing up and also underneath the cab on the driver's side frame rail facing up

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

My GMC has a date stamped into the passenger framerail, facing outboard, visible below the pass. door, and VIN at the usual location under the drivers inner fender facing upward.

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

i can't remember if enough of the VIN is on there to I.D. the year or not... it is a partial VIN.
Here is where it is located up front...at least, on a 2 wheel drive truck anyways.

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

OK, just confirmed, it is a partial VIN, the very first digit should be the year.

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

Well 70 would be an open knuckle but drum brakes and 71/72 would be open knuckle and disc brakes up front. 69 down were closed knuckle...ball style.

First number on frame vin is year.

Re: Vin Number on the frame?

That's all good stuff to know. I'll have to figure out if it's eaton, dana 44 or dana 60 too. I don't know what the different ones look like. I definetly want disk brakes up front. At one time i saw an axle guide online, i should've printed that out, it showed all the different style diffs with pics.
