I think I'd replace the motor with a crate 350. I hear stories about the GMC V6's using gas like they big blocks without the power. It would make a great work truck as in take care of work truck not abuse. Great to cut wood with.
Anyone else dealt with the GMC V6>? Any comment for or against?

I don`t consider the differences in fuel economy from one engine to the next in these trucks.None get what is considered good at $2.50-$3.00 a gallon.I`d like it the way it is.The V6s had big block torque,actually they are big block V6s.I wish I could be retired and just use that to run to town from my cabin with my straw hat,dog,and a lifetime of stories.That`s just a "slow you down" kinda truck when I look at it,casual.

GMC V6's are great engines. Granted, they won't turn up like a 350 Chevy, but they have oodles of torque straight through their RPM range. 180hp and around 280 lb. feet of torque for a 305E. The blocks were made with a lot of nickle, so they could last 200,000+ miles of abuse. (like 2-ton truck abuse, or bigger). In a pick-up, they get about the same mileage as a small-block, 10-13 mpg. They like the gas but IMO would run with anything on the road if you know how to run them...........I pulled loads with my '69 1-ton with a 305 V-6 on the same roads as my neighbor with a 351 powered Ferd F-250, and heck, even my buddies Ferd Powerjoke didn't do much better as the auto would drop to second.

I had a 350 in my C-20, and loaded the V-6 would blow the doors off it. I am anxious to see what the Big Block in the K-20 I just bought will do compared to the V-6

Honestly though, for 305 cubes out of 6 cylinders it runs like a raped ape. I can tell alot of stories about what I was grossing rolling over the scales with that rig. And the V-6 will move it right out. I personally like it because I can lug the h*ll out of it and it just won't quit, it will lug down to where the V-6 makes its peak torque and stay there..........It is unreal. I tried to see if I could kill it hauling wood home over the mountains, and if I'd have pushed it any harder I'd have had to put a clutch in it. I had a tad over two cord of oak and ash on, and I pulled out of the road(facing up grade) and it was all up hill from there, and I got her up into 4th and it just kept going and going, like I said, I had to drop to third before the clutch gave up

This ebay truck would make an awesome machine!

I'm with Jake an the others on the V6 issue. Nothing would be sweeter than a stock 3/4 ton GMC 305/V6 4x4 4 speed combo like this truck has.

The only down side is the cost of rebuilding a 306 V6 Vs a SB V8 if necessary. I think rebuilding the V6 would be considerably higher from what I understand.

Yup. Tom has a good point. If they blow up, you might as well slap in a V8. Unless you know exactly where to get parts for it, then you do the rebuild.

TP, whats the cruising speed for the V6 in your ton truck? I'm considering putting some 3.54 gears under my truck to get it cruise along better.

Keep the V-6! 305's are not that expensive to rebuild, NAPA has most everything. Besides, how many '67-'72 trucks have 350's in them?

Yup, they make a pretty good roar through some straightpipes. They also shake the whole truck when you rev them, kind of like an old muscle car.

I don't run any faster than 50 in it.............I don't have a tach on it, but it sounds like the engine likes it until about 55........From their up I'd want another gear(OD) if I was driving often at that speed. I don't know what rear ratio it has, but I imagine 4.56's.

If I used mine any more, I'd drop a NV4500 5 spd behind it in place of the SM-465 4spd.

I've got 3.07s in one of the 68s, it goes faster than I care to push it. The V-6s can handle a steep gear that would make a small block choke at low RPMs.

I was thinking 3.54's would scoot my truck around real good, but we'll have to try it out on the road first to see how it does cruising.

My grandad swears by these V-6's he always said there are two things that will happen when you hook that beast to a load, the load will move or the motor will bury the truck, he hooked to things no 1 ton should have been able to move and his 1/2 ton GMC hauled it.

I had customer who had a big truck with the 478 in it, wow, for a v6, it moved that large truck like it was nothing.

FYI, you can get a rebuilt 305v6 for about 2k. All you need to do is put an intake carb, valve covers and oil pan on it, which you have from your old motor

Pop rivets.... That truck looks like it might be a 50 footer: Looks good from 50', but don't get any closer! Why are the inner fenders so dirty? Was it always a flat bed, or did the box rust off?

I`d say it`s more like a 1 footer.If you look real close and hard,you could find something wrong with it.The inner fenders are original and seller says they could use replacing.That body looks awfully straight and the paint couldn`t be any shinier.Looks to have been stripped.It was a fleet-maintained vehicle for most of it`s life (School District).
