Slow Oil Leak
I have a leak, but for the life of me I cant tell where. Its not a big leak, but
enough to make a puddle in the drip pan I have after a month. My engine was just rebuilt about 5k miles ago. What are the comon areas for a leak so I can try and hunt it down? Thanks! PS - 307 V8 stock engine with the original valve covers and oil pan.

I would look at the dust cover on the tranny to see if a drop has formed there. Unless the engine builder had a problem with other gaskets, the rear main is normally the culprit. You might also just want to check the valve cover bolts. I've found them only finger tight after a rebuild when the motor warmed up. Good luck and I hope it's something simple.

Valve covers or intake manifold end seals are common leakers.

Not much to go on but if you can't find it from the common places I would look at the back of the intake and if you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge
check the fittings behind the distributor. An electric op sending unit has been known to leak also. Some not so common places are, under the distributor base, behind the fuel pump mount, and the mounting gasket for the oil filter. Can you tell what part of the engine it's coming from? I assume we're talkin oil and not tranny fluid.

Go to the GM dealer and buy a bottle of UV dye that you use with a black light. It's about $8 for an ounce.

The common areas for an oil leak in a chevy is anywere that has oil in it.

Chevy's and Harley's.......if they aren't leaking oil they aren't running right.

Get you some engine degreaser, go to car wash and hose it down clean,take it around the block a couple of times and get a flashlight and do some inspecting keep doing this until you get a drip to show.If its your rear main seal it wont show up until it drips out the weep hole in the dust cover.

Speaking of dust cover I do not have one over my flywheel I guess I should try and find one for my th400.

put cardboard down on the floor to have a mark where it's dripping then just look up from there

well if it's dripping from the front crossmember that eliminates the back of the engine// theres the hole(should be sealed with a short bolt with sealant) on the front of the block near the fuel pump,the fuel pump mount, the timing chain cover the front crankshaft seal , the front intake gasket,or the valve covers, oilpan gasket too// or it could be power steering???
