Power steering question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, this thing obviously has a different front end under it but it has power steering(not sure if original) but its leaking where the shaft goes in. SO, I got a seal kit for it but i dont even know if this is the original gearbox that and I've never taken one apart. does anyone know if its difficult or have any advice? Also, does this look like its correct for a 70 3/4 4x4?

The truck has the original style pump so it probably is the original

I can't say if your box is original or not.. but it is correct for the 69 - 80 4X4's,
Not able to help you on how easy or difficult it is to change the shaft seal.. I always leave steering boxes up to the professional rebuilders..
I did notice you have loosened and unscrewed the sector shaft preload bolt.. if you tighten that back down too much you will have problems turning smoothly and too loose you have lots of "play" in the steering.

The bad thing about the seal kit is that the parts kit is for the larger diameter shafts, I dont think you can get the seal for the small input shaft anymore. Everyone I got was for the large one. There are 2 diameters for the input shaft, My advice is to buy a new one with a lifetime warranty and order a new coupler from a vendor.

I've rebuilt two power steering boxes in my life. Both times they were difficult to take apart and difficult to properly reassemble. Since I didn't have a manual, I had to figure it all out for myself and I can tell you it isn't easy.

But if you are poor like me and have the time and the desire you can try it. When you succeed you can say you know how to do it. It will probably be a lot easier if you can find a manual. On the other hand, if you have the money or don't want a lesson in patience, I'd order a reman.
