Converting to a manual trans steering column w/a floor shifted automatic
i want to add a b&m floor shift in my truck and swap out the auto steering column for a manual one.i dont care if its tilt or not as a tach will be mounted on the column.my questions go as follows
to switch over from auto to manual will i have to use a manual trans truck neutral safety switch or can i use the one from the auto? in terms of the column swap and the auto linkage which bolts to the column do i have to use manual trans linkage parts with an automatic or the ones from the auto trans? how exactly does the shift linkage hook up on a B&M truck shifter. thanks in advance for the replies

Re: Converting to a manual trans steering column w/a floor shifted automatic
The B&M shifter will have a switch on it to do the Neutral Safety function, as well as the back-up lights. I have done three trucks this way. I put the B&M Truck Megashifter in an 84, an 86 and a 91 Chevy truck. The 84 has a "Manual Shift" column in it now and the other trucks have just had the shift linkage blocked so they don't move the lock mechanism from the "PARK" position. I did this so I could get good firm positive shifts and not slip- into reverse by accident.
The column shift parts are in my storage pile, the B&M shifter has a cable that replaces all of that stuff. |

Re: Converting to a manual trans steering column w/a floor shifted automatic
I could tell you all of the neat things and such, but I am enclosing a link to the B&M Megashifter PDF file for installation. http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/10.pdf
The cable is easy, the company sends the brackets necessary along with pictures. The wiring is easy also---just connect the shifter to the wiring that is on the switch on top of the column up under the dash for the Neutral Safety switch. The back up lights are also easy, you will have to find those wires on the switch on the column too. |
