Post REAREND (OPTIONS)

I am trying to weigh my options. I have a 70 1/2 with 12 bolt 308 rearend (coil). I want to go with 5 lug 373 if I could only find one. My other option is to change to Ford 9" and then what kind of modifying would be necessary.
The easiest swap would be out of a 71 or 72, direct bolt in but I am unable to find one.
Also airride suspension will be installed if that makes a difference.

The 3.73 coil rear should be one of the easiests to find. Most 6 cylinder trucks will have 3.73. If you are looking for posi also it may be more difficult. Just keep scrounging junkyards and post on the parts board. One will show up when you least expect it. I think spending a ton of money on a bolt in 9" is foolish.

You can get a 71 or 72 rear end and it will be a direct replacement, except for brake lines. You can also get a Lincoln Versaile (spelling?) rear end. Its a 9" Ford with disc brakes and a 5 on 5 bolt pattern.

I read a little about that Lincoln piece...it isn't as good as everyone makes it out to be...and good luck finding one too.

OK whats the low down on the Lincoln rears? I to have always heard to stay away from them for one reason or another. Yet every time I come across one in a yard the rear is missing so they can't be that bad. I believe they are the big bearing housings & I've definitely heard the discs were problematic but that could simply be fixed w/a Explorer/aftermarket disc set-up. They usually came w/3.00's but 9" rears are known for their ease of changing ratios. Anyone have the actual width on this rear or know if early/late rears differ? I know early years got 5 on 5 bolt pattern but if it's more than 1 or 2" shorter different offset wheels would add to the trouble factor when swapping into our trucks. Anybody done this? Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Scot

well 250 engines got ,373 std equipment ands 3.73 was always, std equipment axle on all 67-72 1/2 ton trucks including 4x4.

when you ordered the turbo hydramatic tranny or the chevy 4 speed then 3.07 came with=, thats how it worked. and in 71 and 72 thjere were ALOT more 350 and th350 trannies installed than anything else, they are way common, and so then technically in 71 72 the 3.07 is alot more common than 3.73, i find 3.07 all the time under these 71 and 72's, if its an auto trans or 4 speed originally, then its 90% chance of being a 3.07 gear.

you can use a 64-72 axle, they al wil bolt in, just that 64-70 are 6 lug, but it sill work, you cna worry about going 6 to 5 later on, the 3.73 are way more common before 71

If anyone is interested in 5 lug rearends out 71 or 72 Chevy truck I know where a few are.

I did the lincoln rear swap about a month ago. Very happy with it.Overall width is 63 1/2 inches. Exact same width as the 12 bolt five lug rear i removed. GENE
