carrier bearing

Well, I think I blew my carrier bearing out last night. I felt a driveline vibration as I was cruising home. I have a 2-piece driveshaft in my SWB, probably from the PO putting in a man. tranny. I looked up under the truck and the housing of the carrier bearing has come out the rear of the x-member. I don't even know if this is a stock type carrier bearing. The first pic is a view from the side. The second pic is a side view from the bottom showing how the carrier actually came out through the back and the mount is twisted 90* to the right. What do I need to do to fix this? I haven't fully lifted the truck up and gotten under to do a complete inspection yet. It's so hot here I'm gonna wait till later this afternoon.

Re: carrier bearing

The spot welds broke. I've done that to a couple, finally figured out to weld the new one up before I put it on. Those tiny spots are ridiculous.

So what do I have to do to fix it? Is it something I can do without removing everything? I have a welder.

Re: carrier bearing

I've broken 3 of these and every time I've done it I had to remove the driveline. If yours is like mine, you'll have to have the carrier pressed out and a new one pressed in. It sucks when it breaks. Yours looks like it has the two bolts that hold it in from the top, which is what mine had. Not sure if you can weld it back together with any sort of reliability. Someone else may be able chime in with other info.

Re: carrier bearing

You'll have to pull the driveshaft, but you can re-weld the top of the carrier bearing housing back on. I had a guy at work use a MIG welder to fix mine about 3 weeks ago. Solid as a rock now.

Well, I welded it back together. Didn't need to pull the driveshaft. The bearing was still good, so I got lucky. I was able to spin the housing down enough to get to it with the MIG. It was originally only spot welded in like 8 places. I welded it up good, hopefully no problems from here. Thanks for the input guys.

Re: carrier bearing

The ones I have been getting from NAPA here are already welded along the sides in addition to the top spot welds,
something to consider when you need a new one.

Re: carrier bearing

Guys, if you think that is bad...........I am so sick of GM's carrier bearings it is unreal........My Cummins truck eats them as fast as I can put them in. I am going to remove everything from the bellhousing back(All GM) because none of it is holding up. The original carrier lasted longer than the new ones!

Re: carrier bearing

Mine from napa just blew out too. It was welded up all the way but it sheared off where the metal starts to go around the bearing. I think Im going with a one piece shaft to get rid of it this time....

Re: carrier bearing

I wonder if they are having these made somewhere that the manufacturer is using a cheaper or smaller guage metal? If you don't have a out of balance condition from a bad U-joint those carriers should last a # of years.

Re: carrier bearing

Hey this is a kindof related question, can you easily use the one piece shaft from a 6 cyl. truck in a V-8 truck with no problems?

Re: carrier bearing

Throw it all away and have a1 piece made. Its a good fix on a Short bed truck and can also be done on a long bed. I have both and they work perfect. I forgot what a carrier bearing looked like.

Re: carrier bearing

I got tired of replacing carrier bearing and got one of these. One thing to check is to make sure your rear end is centered If its not that will eat up carrier bearings as fast as too great a pinion angle will eat U-Joints.

Re: carrier bearing

For a few hundred bucks you can have a nice custom driveshaft made that will solve your problem as well

Maybe the GM carrier bearings aren't designed to handle what that cummins is putting out...

Re: carrier bearing

I was having problems with my u-joints and carrier bearing. It actually cost me less to have a custom 1 piece drive shaft made and put in with new u-joints than it would've cost to replace the 3 u-joints and carrier bearing.
