My Red 68 Died On Me
I pulled a few teeth and got my wife to go out with me to a local night hang out. I wanted to take both of my trucks the yellow 67 and my red 68. But we only took the red 68. And about 10 minutes into the ride I hear a tapping noise. I let my foot of the gas pedal and coast to the left side of the road and the same time the engine dies. The truck showed no oil pressure when it died. My oil pressure gauge sometimes stick and I have to tap it to make it work.. I put some oil into the engine start it good oil pressure and make it twenty seconds to a parking lot where it dies again. Tow it home take the oil pan off , find chunks of metal in the pan, a nut and a bolt. Tell me that this does not suck. Now I am like should I rebuild it, can it be rebuilt, buy a crate, how much? I am now just using my 67 and just being pissed at my 68. What should I do ? It is a 327 pulled out of a 60's Corvette.///

I think you should just push that old red heap to the side of your yard. I'll be by to pick it up in the morning.
Seriously, it sounds like you dropped a rod. My guess is the crank is trashed, and maybe the block as well. Unless you enjoy the thrill of building your own motor, it is almost impossible to beat the cost and convenience of a GM crate motor. That's the way I went in my 77 and don't regret it for a minute...

Ditto, what Ken said.. Of course I'm still putting my together and waiting to hear it o=for the first time.
Go with a crate. You'll like the 350 much more than the 327 (just my opinion).

Just drove throught the neighborhood tonight and I saw your red truck in the driveway and your yellow one had the left front wheel off of it. Whats up with the yellow one?

Well the truck red 68 went down and was up on jack stands. I took it down and put the old rims on it. I did not want my 20's hanging out there. I took it down because of home owners. The yellow 67 I started to change the front shoes on but only finished one side before I had to leave. I have needed to change the shoes ,but after I cut the tall grass, and did all the other things around the house I ran out of time AGAIN LIKE ALWAYS. I remember you said for me to drop by sometime when your green truck is there but I always feel umcomfortable to stop. I am training for my fight now and run by there alot. One day I saw a old like 50's truck on a trailer. Is that your new project..?

I'd go with a crate motor as well. Just chiming in based on comments above. You can get a 350 with 3yr/50k mile warranty for around $1200. comes in a 250HP/300TQ or something package for the basic motor.

I am in Austin but am from H-town. A good friend of mine has a shop that could do a great job. He's been there since '93 and has a lot of specific experience with 67-72 trucks. He's machinest and a mechanic.

Huevudo, I have a friend that owns TRM Diesel and Auto and has an excellent reputation and is a car nut too. His shop is in Pasadena off of Randolph and Spencer. Has a few 150,000.00 dollar race cars and such. I can get you a deal on a chevy crate motor if you want. I work for a Chevy dealer and get GM employee pricing. Let me know if you need some help. That 59 chevy pickup was a project that we are building for the owner of the Chevy dealer that I work at in the bodyshop. I took it to get soda blasted and acid dipped in Conroe. It's a tough call between rebuild vs. buy new. I have a shop not too far that offers a lifetime warrenty. It's $1000 vs. $1200 for a crate with 3/36 warrenty.
I think for the ease of use, I will go crate next time. My current motor is doing well, but I have had other motor related issues that piss me off. |

Don`t go Jasper.Their warranty is a sales pitch,then they try like he!! to weasl out.They usually try to throw blame at the little old installer or you.Then,when it is found to be poor quality in the build,the little old installer plays he!! to get his pay.They,re sweat shopmotors,IMHO.
If you had catastrophic failure,a crate is best.I would only build off a motor like that to do a full-race motor.I would rebuild a motor that`s just tired.Any damage to the block or rotating assembly is where I draw the line.

Thanks I am leaning hard toward a crate. Carlos I should call you soon. I called Monument Chevy and it was like alot of dough. I was really surprised how much higher it was than on the net at places. 350 crate long block. I need the engine for my red 68 and also need a/c for my 67 yellow. Really in a perfect world. I want a crate in my 67 yellow with new vintage air, and my 350 in my 67 installed in my 68 all in two weeks. Not a problem just money . Money takes alot of problems away. The only problem in finding the money for your problems.

Hey Carlos, thanks for the time you took away from your job the other day to get the quotes. They sound good. Today I spent enough money to buy a crate and a Vintage Air system. And all of it was not my trucks related. It is what usually happens to my projects. The funding for them. When I set time to do them I am alright and sometimes work on them until 4 am in the morning. I get focused and try to finish things. Buying things is always my problem. What to buy, where, how much there are so many options and I always say to my self WAIT AND GET THE BEST THAT I WANT. Then I am forced to spend it on other things. I borrowed a engine hoist today and it is at my house. So I will remove the red 68 engine and set it up in the garage. This way I can put the 350 into the red 68. And when I buy the crate it can go into the yellow 67. all in the perfect world again.
