Sorting out option codes on glovebox sticker?
HI,
I've been looking at these for awhile, both on trucks I've seen locally and when people post pics of their option sheets, and like everybody else I've noticed that sometimes the codes are just 3 digits (for example C42 = heater) and sometimes they are 5 or 6 digits (for example C42AC = heater or 1C42AC = heater). Anyway I've been trying to see if there was any pattern as to when the 3 digit vs 5 digit codes were used. Not too much luck so far, apart from seeing that it doesn't seem to be a Chevy vs GMC thing, and not a year-to-year thing either (I've seen 1972's with 3 digits and 1972's with 5 or 6 digits). So far the only thing I've turned up that might explain it is the assembly plant. To be specific, every Flint , Tareytown, Atlanta, and St. Louis truck I've seen had 5 or 6 digits, while every Fremont or Baltimore truck had 3. But I haven't seen all that many trucks overall, so I can't be sure if that's the real explanation or not. Anybody willing to look at their option sheets and post what plant their truck came from and what their option #'s look like so we can maybe figure this thing out? |

I've got an example that will throw your plant theory out the window:
1968. Vin: KE248ZXXXXXX Z= Freemont, CA and it has 6-digit codes. 1969. Vin: KE149ZXXXXXX Z= Freemont, CA and it has 3-digit codes. I've looked everywhere I can think of and there is no pattern. None of it makes sense. If that doesn't confuse you enough, my '72 c10 has both three and six digit codes. If you ever figure it out, I'd like to know, because I've given up looking.

What does ABS on the shocks mean? I found it = Absorbers

I would love to find a way to decode the 6 digit codes. Some of mine are very mysterious as they don't have a description next to them.
Both my 69 and 71 have these 6 digit codes.

Ohhhh man. This option stuff is a can of worms when it comes to what plant did what. I have studied this for many years for Janesville, Flint, and St. Louis plants.
Here is what I can sum up: All 3 plants up through 1969 used the 6 digit RPO codes, ie 1PV6AB etc etc. Janesville in 1970 switched to the 3 digit RPO codes, ie PV6. Meanwhile Flint and St. Louis kept on using the six digit RPO codes through 1971. Then for 1972 they still used the six digit RPO codes, but then last 2 suffix codes changed from Alpha to Numeric as in: "1A11AA TINTED GLASS" was changed to "1A1120 TINTED GLASS", ie "AA" is now "20". Anybody know what the last 2 suffix letters such as "AA" or "20" means?? or the first number "1" in the example above? The suffixes can/could be different plant to plant, year-to-year, but generally are the same. In 1972 the Freemont plant had some printed with all 6 digit codes, and then some with just all 3 digit RPO codes listed. Then ... sometimes, on the same sheet, you may get a mix of both 3 digit RPO codes and 6 digit RPO codes (ie plants that used the 3 digit RPO as standard). It looks like when you get a true "mix" of RPO codes, the buyer was adding some odd/special equipment. Haven't heard of anyone with the GM books on here able to decode the oddball RPO's. The regular RPO's are easy to decode with a list. Hope this helps! Yeah right! -Roger

same RPO code no matter if is 3 or 6 digit, just look in middle of the 6 digit codes for the actual equipment regular production code,

I've seen your option sheet posted before and can't make out heads or tails on the 9XX option codes. That is the weirdest build sheet I've ever seen.
I don't know who would have that kind of info to make sense of it. -Roger

My 72 came out of the Fremont plant and all of the listed options are three digits.
Racedvl, I hope at least a few extras have been added to that truck in the 30 odd years since it was manufactured.

Mine's a '70 GMC from Fremont and it's got 3-digit codes all the way too. IIRC, my buddy's '69 Chevy had 3-digits as well, but I don't know what plant...and it got totaled, anyway.
In fact...I think nearly every truck I've seen around here has the 3-digit codes.

04625AC ....parchment/cloth interior. Ive got 13 more like that . They all start with "0" . Fremont 1968
