Damper pulley question

I just removed the alternator and related stuff from the front of a 350 that I am pulling out of a 69 4x4. Non of the engine is original, it is the 3rd engine in the truck ( the PO thought)!! I was going to use the pulleys and brackets, power steering etc. on my new 383 going back in. After removing the alternator I was able to lign of sight the power steering pump pulley to the damper pulley front groove. The damper pulley is 3/8 of an inch to the rear from the power steering pump pulley. It worked that way and everything seems tight. What is up here???? It is the short water pump by the way.
Thanks

Re: Damper pulley question

You probably have a mixture of pullies and brackets. The 69 originally had a cast pully and cast power steering pump brackets. If either is stamped then they will not align.

Re: Damper pulley question

The 400 parts will fit, but it probably has the long water pump so everything will be different.

Re: Damper pulley question

If it's only 3/8" off, you'll probably be ok. I've seen some from the factory off that much.

Re: Damper pulley question

Yea, the PO ran it that way for who knows how long and I ran it for another 1000miles or so before I decided to start the project. Anyway, I am going to start looking for options. If I buy a set of pulleys from Summit or Jegs, will they match up okay???? Or is it a matter of moving the power steering pump, or perhaps an offset pulley on the pump????
