I take it the rear main was the culprit?

Btw hehe how hard is it to change a main real seal anyway? I know you have to drop the pan but whats after that? New territory for me.

Thanks

Re: Need 350 rear main seal and 1 piece oil pan part #

If you have the one piece rear seal, you do not need to drop the pan to change it, but the tranny would have to come out or slid back enough for access, unless of course if the pan is leaking too.

Re: Need 350 rear main seal and 1 piece oil pan part #

I was just talking to a guy at a machine shop about this and he said that he hit this kinda thing once before. He changed out the real seal, oil pan gasket etc. Still leaked. Then someone who worked for him said did you change out the pcv? That fixed it. Think I will try that first. Thats easy to swap

I didnt think these trucks had a PCV, learn something new every day. I know mine is leaking, the guys that put my headers in saw it when they had it up on racks last week.

Might take it to a car wash and pressure wash the poop outta that thing, then look for new leak/drips over the next few days, see if you can pin-point where it is coming from.

Funny that you say that I just came back in from cleaning it up Took a few damp shop rags and a couple paper towels out there and wiped it down pretty good. Later tonight I will pull it in and drop the dust cover then shine a light at the flexplate and see If i see anything. I have talked to a few people about this and they are laying odds thats its the oil pan and not the rear seal I got 5 $ on the seal myself. Its never that easy with me LOL

Re: Need 350 rear main seal and 1 piece oil pan part #

2 pc rear main seal:

FelPro PN 2900 - Silicone/Neoprene (Around $10)
FelPro PN 2912 - Fluoroelastomer (Around $20)

as far as the 1 piece pan seal - what year is your motor? - You need to know what front seal you have - Thin or Thick (Depending on year) (They are all about $35-$40)
FelPro PN 1880 - '75-'79 (Thick Front Pan Seal, Driver's Side DipStick)
FelPro PN 1885 - '55-'75 (Thin Front Pan Seal, Driver's Side DipStick)
FelPro PN 1881 - '80-'85 (Pass Side Dip Stick)

This is another PN for the Pan Gasket - Also looks to be like the one for the "Thick Front Seal", but has provisions for both Driver & Passenger Side Dip Sticks

most of the replacement motors/target master motors have provisions for both the driver's side dipstick and the passenger side dip stick - but you will have to plug one off if you have both and it isn't already plugged.

which side is you're dip stick on?

also you will have the "Thick Front Seal"

ARKRACING- Thanks for all that good technical information. I didn't realize my 72- 350 and 79- 400 took different oil pan gaskets. May definitely save me some grief on down the road. This is a great site to learn chevy stuff.
And SKOKIE- Be sure and check your valve cover gaskets too; as they can leak in the back and run down the back of the engine. Just my .02 worth

Most FelPro OilPan kits - the original cork style will come with both "Thick & Thin" front Pan seals to cover you.
If you buy the FelPro KS2600 (complete engine kit) it will have both style front pan seals as well.

But when working with the "1-piece retrofit design" - you need to know which front seal you have
