Cool 383 build up (progress pics)

well iv been wanting a 383 for some time now and i finally got one

Few days ago i hade to take the ferry across the river to get this

Today was the first day working on it

Paint




tomarrow im going to be picking up new piston rings, conecting rod bearings and the engine main bearings so ill beable to put the bottom end together.

Wow this is like almost my exact motor, I got the 383 stroker, I got the same Carb. Im not sure what other performance parts you got but you should be able to rack up the number of ponies, My 383 will be pumping 500+ ponies

Not to burst you bubble but you will be hard pressed to get 325 ponies from a mild built 383.

Well my ALL PERFORMANCE tricked out motor had been quoted for between 500-520 HP, So sorry to burst YOUR BUBBLE!

Any camshafts coming? Heads? What other performance parts you getting.

for the cam i have a crane 270, heads im prob going to go with some edalbrocks, edalbrock fuel pump, not sure what roller rockers yet.

Today I got some more parts for the build.

64cc edelbrock rpm heads with crane enegizer roller rockers.



Some other parts.

comp dual chain timming set, arp head bolts, comp lifters, comp 276 cam, proform rods and edelbrock head gasket set.



few more pics.





Should be taking the engine down to the shop in the next few days to geter built up

Same thing going on here. Heads are cast iron 74cc open chamber, intake punched out to 2.02 Crane roller cam and rockers 1.6 intake arms, performer air gap, carter AFB 750 MSD ignition, Hedman long tube 1 5/8 headers.
I was told to expect 1 hp per cu in. and 400 ft lbs torque.

That info comes from pro builder with dyno in his shop and experience building many a 383.
Anyway, plenty of power.

Looks good. My motor is a lot like yours too, same pistons its a stroker holley 650 double pumper, Edelbrock Performer. With those heads and it being a stroker you'll easily get 350hp 375 if you set it up right (match cam to motors perf. range, curve distributor to perf. range etc...) The only thing i see a slight problem with is the air gap, there a good intake........on a racecar. An intake like that is made to run from like 4,000 to 10,000, thats where it works. A stroker is overevved at 6500, they like 2700-5400 approximately. Thats why i got the performer its rated at idle-5000. Its your motor, im just giving my $.02

I also have performer intake ,so after ill swap the air gap for the performer and let you know if it made any diffrance

What machine work had to be done to the block to except the crank? I've read somewhere that you have to grind down on the rods at the bolt cap bosses to clear the cam. Is this true? I'm thinking on building a 383.

nice set up i think you will be happy with the air gap i have a performer on my blazer and a air gap on my 58 chevy i like the air gap better and i stay under 6000 rpm .....most of the time

The Performer Air-Gap is rated at idle-5500 rpm. The Performer RPM Air-Gap is rated at 1500-6500 rpm. the Air-Gap intakes are dual plane, but with a seperated plenum design for a cooler discharge wich makes better power. It has been proven to still make good power beyond 6500 RPM though due to the seperated plenum. What you're thinking of is a single plane, open plenum design like the Victor Jr. or Weiand Team G intakes. Open plenums make better power on high revving, high hp engines. Single plane intakes are normally not recommended for street use. The Air-Gap intakes are great street use intakes.

It would not surprise me. I have heard about every horsepower number under the sun come up for the stroker motors. I believe what the dyno kicks out. And it will have to be one hell of a motor to get 500 hp. Not saying it can't be done but lots of money to do it and we're talking street motors without nitrous.

Cool,I'm building up a 383 stroker bored .030 over,although it's going in a 78 Camaro. I started to use the same timing chain cover as your's but the engine builder needed to put a cam button on the cover so I had to go with one of his. I did have the the engine painted Chevy orange(best color in the world to me!) and with the aluminum Vortec-style heads,black valve covers and breather with Chevy writing and the bowtie,it looks awesome! And the builder told me a solid 475 horses to the wheel if I use a 350 trans like I plan on doing.
