Help on some old slots mag.

Hey folks,

I picked up a set of mags the other day. They are 8lug slots fronts are 8.5x16.5 4.5bs and the rears are 9.75x16.5 4.75bs. I'm havein some issues with the lugs.

I know I have 9/16 threads.

do the washers hold the rim on or do the shank style lugs hold them. The fronts arent a problem the standard lug shank nuts will fit the holes and they should be about flush in the back with the washer right???

The rears are an issue the holes are larger than the 9/16 shank do so do I need inserts to tighen them up or do the rears center on the washers.

PO had them on a ford that had 1/2" lugs on the rears he had a few (like three per tire) inserts on the rims to make the holes smaller and he used conical style lugs.

1 do the rims center on the washer?
2 how long should the shank be??

Any help would be great if you can follow my dribble.

thanks,

bob

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

most of those questions depends on who of the 30 or so manufacturers that made slotted wheels made your wheels

This is going to require pictures to correctly answer your questions regarding the rears. It sounds like you have two different styles of wheels.

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

They are the came wheels but wider widths. The pics are of the rears. Front and back you can see the "sleeve" he had installed fo 1/2" conical style nuts. The holes look too uniform to be a hack job.

thanks for the help.

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

Well.......it looks to me as if the sleeves are cast right into the wheel in the 1st and 2nd pic. For the 3rd, it almost looks as it someone drilled a few of the sleeves out. Thats how it looks to me, but I could be wrong.

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

The first pick there is only one sleeve showing @ 1'oclock.

The second pick no sleeves just the holes. from the front.

The last pick shows the sleeve from the back it just pops right out. (hole on right)

thanks,
bob

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

Hmmm...I have very similar wheels (2 - 9.75 wide and 2 - 8.5...want to trade your 9.5's for my 8.5's and the correct nuts?) and all mine use the nuts with a shoulder slightly smaller and shorter than the hole dia. and wheel thickness. There seem to be two different stud sizes depending upon your triuck year. Longhorn Man has this one down. I just go to the swap meets to get my correct wheel nuts and never think about them again.

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

Tempting offer, let me think on it. Are you sure your interested these 9.75's they would really stick out on the front. They are even with my sheetmetal on the rears. I just don't want to invest any more money into them.

So from the last post, it looks like I'm over thinking the whole thing. The shank style lugs have some wiggle room and the washers center the wheel.

Thanks for the info, and the fact that they come a little short on the length is good to know.

Re: Help on some old slots mag.

OK, I found pep boy's carries the shank style lugs nuts. I picked up a set and they're too long, they stick out past the wheel mounting surface on the rears. They are not the long style but The internet sells a shorter style.

They must be shank style correct?? I nean I can't use the intergral nut/washer style?? I'm assuming the shank steadies the lugs?

#2 These lug nuts won't fit in the front wheels. A smidge to narrow. I don't know if they just need to be cleaned out or can these be opened up a 1/16"

thanks,

bob
