Yeah I kid of did; didn't I, sorry, but when i first read yours, it sounded a little different. I thought I was just supporting your terminology. Sorry if it sounded wrong. It was the thought that counted. So, are you really mad?

NO piece parts ... More confused, because I think we said same thing. So to ask question again, do I have it correct as far as procedure to check total timing, or is there something I don't understand?? I am putting MSD spark in it so I have all of the good adjustablement stuff.

I think that your Machinist is right in his discussion of the detonation (impact on the crank and rods), but he is limiting you with his discussion of the amount of total timing advance. I would look at using a timing light with the advance feature and set the timing at 30 degrees toatl and then work my way up. I am betting that you can go to 35 or 36 degrees without a detonation problem. You will know when you hear it. It will sound as a growl from inside the motor. It is basically spark knock under load, and will appear mostly when you accelerate. The true fact is that it will be happening all of the time, but work with your timing and get the best out of your engine.
I discussed timing issues with some of the best guys that I could talk to and the horsepower comes from a good setting in your timing and your carb adjustments. Think of a flame on a torch, when is it the hottest? The blue color in a flame is the point that it is reaching a high temp and making the best of it's air/fuel mix. A red rich colored flame is a poor heat generator, so this applies to a cylinder when it is firing. The carb needs to be ever so slightly towards a lean condition and the timing is set to hit at the max moment. The MSD equipment allows for a spark through the compression cycle igniting all of the avialble gases that can be burned and getting the max use out of a single charge of air and fuel. The high voltage coil is a necessary part also.

Hey, it's nice to see you two decided to take marriage counciling. You both make very good points and your input from both of you is great. I have verified that the total advance timing is important and should not be ignored for the reasons you both point out so well. All you 383 builders out there....read the last threads. But don't lose sight of other issues with breaking in a new engine build. Watch those RPM's and change the oil and filter and read the spent juice you get so you can see if there is anything that don't belong. Get into WOT after 1000 miles as a reward, but keep it short. You don't wanna make a mess!

Re: 383 build up (progress pics)

So what gas will work with what timing with what compression??? I think the iron heads I have probably lower some of that timing. Ratio is 9.5 to 1 and the engine builder says all of our gas now is cra! so it is more critical on the timing.

Have heard felt and know all about knocking and pre firing so I guess i will start with the 30 and go gut feel from there.

Re: 383 build up (progress pics)

I am running Dart II sportsmen iron heads with 9 to 1 compression. I run a mid grade normally , trying tokeep the cost down, and to this point have not had any pinging issues. I also keep my timing checked for the total at 36 degres.

Re: 383 build up (progress pics)

Good news for me it sounds pieceparts. I was afraid maybe I would be adding octane boost or something to get the thing to run.
Sounds like our engines should be comparable. I also decided to add the Performer air gap.

What do you consider as "broke-In"? How many miles or hours on it?
