tranny mount problem

Well, I need to say that I am a terrible mechanic. I can do the basics on my truck and have for years, like starters, water pumps, fuel pumps, alternaters, points and plugs, carrier bearings, universals ect... Done all these multiple times on me 71 C-10 LWB. Never pulled an engine or tranny before.

Lately I've been feeling a shimmy or vibration on low speed acceleration. So I'm under the truck looking around and I see that the tranny mount bolt is loose. So I tighten it, go to the otherside to tighten that one and it's missing. So I match up the bolts, spend a hour trying to line up the hole, then finally get it started. Tighten it. Tighten the existing one. Go back to give the one that was missing one extra pull and.....................stripped. Dam, was I pissed. Here a pic of the bolt. What did I ruin in the tranny and what should I do. Just having the one bolt tight seems to have solved the problem, but would like to have both bolts. Sorry about all the dirt and grime. This tranny has 250,000 miles on it and has never been worked on. (Or cleaned )

You can pull the crossmembe and heli-coil the hole.

wow now thats a lot of dirt..you could always put a ratchet strap around the trans and cross member and tighten it up and cut the long end off j/k

heli-coil as mentioned .... are we talking about the two screws that we can't see. or the one we can see.

if your talking about the two we can't see..just replace the transmission mount about 12.00..if your talking about the screw's in the transmission case itself then heli-coil

35 years worth. I promise that within the next couple of years I'll get this truck right. You should have seen it before I scraped it.

Also known as a thread insert. It looks like a spring, basically you drill and tap the hole out larger, screw the "helicoil" in and it acts as new threads.

You should be able to find what you need at your local parts store (may have to go to Napa, but I'm pretty sure I bought my last at Oreilly's.)

That was the exact one I was looking at with a google search. I was wondering if you could get it at the parts store? I'll look online. Will that area of the tranny handle the heli-coil insert. When I pulled the bolt out there was an aluminum type metal stuck in the threads. It probably wasn't aluminum, but it sure looked light.

YUP THATS JUST THE OLD THREADS,,,
you may need to get what they call a bottom out tap. to tap the hole if its not open ended (blind hole)..most taps have a pointed end. those work when you can see thru the hold.. if it's a blind hole the bottom out tap has a flat bottom so you can tap the hole all the way to the bottom
