Hei Altinator dependent?
MY Jimmy 307 starts but die's after a minute or two. I do not have the altinator hooked up and am just running off the battery. Could this be a problem or do I need to look deeper? Compression is excellent, wires are new, Carb is new, fuel pump is good, plugs are so-so but it starts consistantly. Thoughts~~~~~~?? Huck

Huck, did you just wire up the HEI, or has it been in there a while?
It kinda sounds like the wire is only getting power while you are cranking it. As long as your HEI is getting 5 volts or so, it'll idle. It won't rev too good with real low voltage, but at real low RPMs the cylinder pressure is so low it doesn't take too much to ignite it. |

Ya, an HEI or any ignition for that matter will drain the battery and run before it dies. I will go out on a limb and say you have a fuel delivey problem. Either be a lean out condition or an idle fuel starvation.

Normally a fuel problem will stumble and die...not just quit though.

Huckster!
Starts right back up on that battery without jumping it? If so I would say you have enough batt power to run the HEI. If you need to jump it to start it again, I would say you don't have enough batt power. I'd check into the fuel delivery also. Take a look at the in carb filter, I've seen them installed backwards.
