impala rear disc???

I know this topic has been around awhile but I got my brackets and finally got to the install and here is an issue that I ran into. I tried this on 2 rearends with the same problem. One is a 1971 12 bolt and one is a 1972 12 bolt. I also slid out the axles on and old rear end to try different axles but with the same results. I finally took the brackets off because I dont see how they will work. I know some hjave installed these calipers and are using them when I put the impala rotors on they run into the bracket before they sit flush on the axle face. It's obvious after looking at this all weekend the problem is in the axles not far enough out from the 4 hole flange The one axle I tried this on is a complete factory setup with no modifications done to it. Any thoughts??? Or does anyone have the measurement like in the picture to see if that is the problem. Thanks

Re: impala rear disc???

Does the bracket have an open side.I thought I saw one of these conversions and the bracket was inside of the flange. With my memory I could be completely wrong, especially since I have never done one. That seems like it would allow the rotor to fit in more and maybe fit the caliper.

These brackets didn't have an open side but they do now because I cut them to try them on the other side of the flange but that didn't work either.

WOW inthuwind thanks for doing that. We have the same measurements from the flange to the back of the axle but I noticed your brackets are thinner I'll go measure my rotors.

Here are pics of the rotor on. Now I can see we have the same set up but 3/8" plates are too thick to clear on this.

Re: impala rear disc???

A couple of things jumps out at me. Is the radiused corners hitting?....in other words, if I tighten up that corner where the OEM bracket bolts on, would it clear? And is the bracket hitting that small ring on the inner part of the rotor?

My thoughts are if some material could be milled off near the rotor, or cut the radius down where it touches the rotor. Whatever need to be done, whether it is reworking these brackets or making thinner ones, rest assured I will do whatever needs to be done to make it right!!!!!!

Re: impala rear disc???

This is inthuwinds pic This spot here is a clearence issue with the size of the bolt heads. But the main problem is the plate thickness won't clear. I wonder if 383 stroker pic may have had a 67-70 housing which is narrower and used the 71-72 5 lug axle's. This would work out with this thick of a plate to get the clearence you need with the longer axle's and narrower housing.

Re: impala rear disc???

Inthuwind - could you please verify what the thickness of your plate is, and did you use metric or SAE bolts to mount the OEM bracket to yours and what size?

I'm thinking a socket head cap screw run from the outside towards the inside might help the clearance issue......

Thanks!

Allen-head would be the way to go, inthuwind said his plate were 3/16" thick.

Those would be great to use. Mine are SAE 3/8" bolts, and I had to turn the heads on the bolt to clear inside the rotor. Those round ones are ideal. I was thinking maybe your plate was thicker.

Re: impala rear disc???

I think we have this figured out. I can see that yours are also tight inthuwind. But with the thinner plate it would clear. This is why we call it custom Now I hope glock can have some thinner ones cut out. Thanks for all the help inthuwind.

Re: impala rear disc???

Thank for the good words!!! I'm not out to hose anyone, just trying to help the shade tree guys like myself get stuff no one else has or makes. I have sent out quite a few sets, but that don't matter. I'll replace every one of them to make it right!

No, that pic is 383strokers. I used that pic to "guess" the thickness. My bad!!

Re: impala rear disc???

I really think what 383 stroker had was the 67-69 rear end housing and put in the 5 lug axles which are longer than what came with the 67-69 and some 70's. If you had that housing 67-69 you would be changing your axles to use the impala rotor. So the 3/8" thick plate would work in that case.

That would be the ideal setup to get more clearence from the rotor to the bracket.

It appears that using the earlier (shorter) housing with the 71 and up axles (longer) would yeild enough clearance for the 3/8" plates.

Re: impala rear disc???

I also bought the brackets from Glock ( Nice pieces) Anyway it will be a while untill I use them but it looks like just a little clearnceing (SP?) will do the trick.
I hope it all works out.
