Step Bumper
I've seen a couple variations of step bumpers claimed to be original on 72's. Can you guys post a picture of the real deal? Thanks.

Re: Step Bumper
There were so many variations as most were dealer installed. Most I see are customized, or at least had the dealers name on them. This is one style that was used on the stepsides during those years

Re: Step Bumper
There was only one factory step bumper original to `72s.They were 4" tall and stamped w/2 ribs,a diamond plate top,and it came up a good 4 " to fill in.Very similar to the`73-ups that were 8" tall and required 4 more inches of stretch in the legs to "step".

Re: Step Bumper
Nice truck - but that step bumper looks like it is from a 1988-1998 pickup

Re: Step Bumper
Bought my 71 GMC in Colorado in 76, from the original owner. But I fear the rear step was a local add on. I'll have to get a pic, but it is similar to the 72, with the exception that the face is flat, not with the ribs.
There were so many variations and aftermarket fabrications for campers etc, especially out west. They made the wrap around styles as well. Many of our trucks could and were sold without any bumper as some state laws didn't require it. I post a pic later this weekend. LILREDGMC |

Re: Step Bumper
My K10 had a bumper just like that when I bought it. I guess it's still laying in the yard at my brothers soon to be ex wifes house!

Re: Step Bumper
Asa,is that all you left layin`there?
The`72 step bumper was one year only.Which like those to follow, were stamped steel.Prior to`72 the were fabbed from 1/4" C-channel,much more stout. All bumpers prior to`73 are what I consider "true" step bumpers because they actually made a step to get up into your truck.Notice the "drop" design. You could get a boot on the step even with the tailgate down.

Re: Step Bumper
Here's some pics of mine. It is definately aftermarket, but it may have been installed by the dealer.
