Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Are you saying it used to be custom sport truck then it changed to Cheyenne, or vice versa?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
I agree with Sport/Truck, ChevyBill should try to get the owner of the black SIERRAGRANDE to sign up, post some pics and maybe add some info to our discussion. Also to see how his "SIERRA" might differ or what similarities it might have to mine or everybody else's?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
My rig is a 72 LWB C2500 Sierra Grande with 402, TH400, AC, PS, PB, and rear leaf springs. It's got the wood grain finish on the panel, glove box, doors, trim, and tailgate. Also has a headliner and houndstooth seat.
It does have the big towing mirrors and AM Radio. I'll have to look at the glove box to see what other options it has if any. |

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
I'll be the odd man out here, but this is my 72 Sierra ( Not Sierra Grande ).
These are all great trucks you have and I know how crazy all these names and options seem to be for someone who hasnt messed with these trucks, but if you stick with the option codes and not names that is the way to stay consistant. Typically there were 3 levels of interior in the 67 & 68 trucks and also the 69 & 70 trucks. 71 & 72's added the 4th level option ( YE9 ) which is Cheyenne Super or Sierra Grande ( Same option and same equipment just different brand name ). This isnt anything new for guys who have messed with these trucks for years but I have seen nearly identical trucks that have options itemized on the option sticker and not. In otherwords all YE9 optioned, fleet side, Cheyenne Super and Sierra Grande trucks come std. with options BX2 ( lower mldng ) and B85 ( Belt mldg ). Even though it is standard with the option some plants listed it on the option sticker and some didnt. It is hard to follow but very interesting. |

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Not sure what is up with lack of headliner in my truck but I also noticed one other missing feature which is the lower trim and tailgate not being woodgrain, after reading the thread I checked it over and it looks original and untouched. Apart from that everything appears as it should with woodgrain on glove box, panel and doors.
I even checked with the PO's, the truck actually belonged to the girlfriend(she died a few years ago) of the guy I bought it from and it was given to her by her father who was the original owner. Her brother lives close by and I asked him about the truck and he told me it was 100% original when it went to his sister and the only thing that was changed while in her posession was a new paintjob. When she died it was inherited by her boyfriend and while in his posession the 402 was swapped for a 350 because he thought it was shot, turned out it wasn't but he thought he was an expert mechanic. The only other thing was the dash was hacked a bit for a steroeo, oh and along the way it lost the mirrors. Now if anyone is lying about anything it would be the guy I bought it from (the boyfriend), which is possible and he says the trim is all original. ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see by the tailgate I'm pretty sure the molding was messed with at some point. |

The order sheet form that the original owner showed he ordered a Sierra Grande and the delivery sheet also has Sierra Grand on it too. You think it only a Sierra? -In sheep’s clothing!?? I wonder if this is due to early delivery of this truck, since you mentioned that they only started offering it in ’71. The truck was ordered September 1970, and delivered February 2, 1971. What are you thoughts? s/t

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
That`s very possible. Is the upper moulding or just side moulding listed as an option?Only SierraGrandes came with that on solid paint jobs.I had an all original `71 CustomCamper/20.It was definately a Cheyenne.Unless on a base truck, the CustomCamper nameplate is an option on that package. The option sheet said CustomSportTruck.the tag on the original capet had a`70 date and the delivery date was late in`70.
BTW:I really like your truck, where you live, and always thought trials riding would be cool to take up...finess.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
I don't mean to Hi-jack this thread but that is the second Spid label I have seen with the M49 option spelled out TURBO HYDRA-MATUC. I thought the other one I had was a typo, anybody else ever notice that?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Found this info tonite while I was surfing...thought I would pass it on.
![]() 1967-1972 A much more modern truck graced showrooms for 1967 as a complete restyle took place. A clean, broad-shouldered look was the main theme, and both Fleetside and Stepside body styles were again offered. A new Custom Sport model debuted, featuring bucket seats with a center console. Long-bed models no longer had a separate name; they were simply called long beds. 1968 brought side marker lights, a 307 V8 (which replaced the 283), a bit more chrome trim and a 50th anniversary edition that featured gold and white two-tone paint. A new grill with a wider horizontal centerpiece and a foot-operated parking brake (which replaced the former hand brake) updated the pickup line for 1969. A trio of new V8s became available this year; a pair of 350s with either 300 or 350 horsepower and a 396 with 310 ponies but more torque than the smaller V8s. GMC introduced a Super Custom model with slightly upgraded interior and exterior trim. Changes for 1970 included a few new options such as a tilt steering wheel and a stereo with eight-track player. And, for the first time, the shiftless masses could operate the four-wheel-drive models thanks to the newly available three-speed automatic transmission. A new egg-crate grill graced the front of the 1971 pickups. New trim level names debuted, including the base Custom, the mid-level Custom Deluxe (formerly the Custom) and the Cheyenne (formerly the Custom Sport Truck). Interior refinements, such as molded door panels and an optional Highlander seat trim, took place for 1972.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Longhorn Man ...
I would side with your knowledge than what I found and copied. As mentioned I found this while surfing last night (I think I had to much coffee)...I think it was an Edmonds site. It goes to show that one can't believe everything one reads. That’s why we should post questions that we have on this site. I did not read this article closely but I think the following is incorrect: 1)Custom Sport model debuted, featuring bucket seats with a center console---this was a Chevy option plus buckets were an option beyond the CST option. (CST 69-70 only) 2) 350s with either 300 or 350 horsepower---was a 350 hp 350 available? 3) the first time, the shiftless masses could operate the four-wheel-drive models thanks to the newly available three-speed automatic transmission. ---wasn't an automatic available with a 4x4 before 1970? 4) A new egg-crate grill graced the front of the 1971 pickups. New trim level names debuted, including the base Custom, the mid-level Custom Deluxe (formerly the Custom) and the Cheyenne (formerly the Custom Sport Truck).---this describes a Chevy 5) Anything else?? WOW!!! I think next time I'll read closer before I post an article. This article must have been written originally by a Ford guy and I was ![]() ![]() ![]() Longhorn Man I stand corrected. ![]() Long live this site ![]()

I’ll start with a question to No3Fan4Ever. Does your truck have wood grain on the glove box & gauge cluster? If not, here my reasoning; If the truck has the Z84 option its possible that the wood grain is omitted (more of a sport truck). I have the Z84 sport truck option and I don’t have the wood grain either and this seems to be a pattern. I’m willing to bet that if you have a Sierra Grande without the Z84 you have wood grain trim on the dash, & those with the Z84 don't. Dean

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Z84 means Sierra/Cheyenne,ignore the inaccurate type.YE9 means SierraGrande/CheyenneSuper.OzarkTim had shed a bit of light on this in his post. There are all kinds of typos on VIN-spec sheets.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
Quote:
My first question is did you ask the guy what he did with the 402 when he yanked it? Is your truck a factory A/C truck ? Now I'm just going on my experience and knowledge of these trucks and it is extensive cause I turned 20 in 1969 I've been looking at and wanting one of these trucks for years and didnt get mine till 2001. The upper moulding on your truck just doent look right to me. It seems too wide and there is no black paint in the center. I guess the test to see if the moulding is factory or not is to check and see if its stuck on ( which would mean aftermarket) or clipped on with which would mean it had factory moulding.. The lower moulding again just doesnt look right to me either for much the same reasons.. Its possible the truck was a moulding delete from the factory ( the factory would do that back then ) and the the owner decided to add the mouldings years later. In the 80's the rage was putting aftermarket mouldings on a lot of the cars and trucks.. I know because I was in the car business then and we put mouldings on a lot of cars and trucks that came from the factory without them..

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
AlreadyGone,
I'd say that upper molding is factory, with the black paint rubbed off over the years. If you look closely at the front edge of the door, you can see where the molding tapers in to allow for opening the door. My dad's 69 molding tapers in the exact same place. Pete |

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?
I addressed Ryan70`s truck in post#60.It`s "put together" in one way or another. So the dash woodgrain is transplanted.
