Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Interesting... It looks like an old Texas Department of Transportation truck. They were always longbeds painted school bus yellow like that with the white wheels and caps. Has it always been in Canada?

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
the silverados in the backround are canadian army milcots, definitly one badass peice of kit. ill grab a couple more pics of them tomorow. te truck was green , then painted yellow by the last owner. right now my plans are to redo the wasted interior, paint it satin black, lower it and get some torque thrusts for it. after thats done ill build a 350 or 400 to replace the 4.3 and maybe throw a 5 speed in her

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Quote:
Those olive drab Silverado’s are called “EMP” for Enhanced Mobility Package. This is GM’s halfass answer to the Power Wagon. GM Fleet sells this package exclusively to GSA fleets.....basically, US and ally militaries. Nothing too special about these other than they have an impressive skid plate package, bead lock wheels, heavy duty jounce bumpers, the typical “Gov-bomb” rear limited slip and tire pressure monitoring. Swing a solid front axle under it, add front and rear E-lockers, sway bar disconnects then…..GM would have something to write home about. The Dirtymax and Allison is an awesome powertrain package. Sometimes it is a mystery why GM feels the need to pollute such a decent truck with such an inadequate IFS suspension. You can check it out here… http://www.gmfleet.com/image/pdf/EMP_Truck.pdf

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
anyone have a goodsolution for gettin cigarette smoke smell out ofan interior? the previous owner was a heavy smoke. there were actually a lot of cigarette ashes coming ot of the dash when i took the face plate off the bezels. im having a hard time gettin the smell out of the plasic, even after wasing it. i imagine the rest of the interior is going to be the same. C.L.R. is working for parts like the ashtray. anyone have any ideas? heres a couple pics that might show how dirty it was when i started
the milcots are pretty decent for what we use them for, which is bascilly just smasin around the woods and swamps! the g wagons are definitly a way better offroader Last edited by munroe; 03-01-2007 at 05:49 PM. Reason: add more info |

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Simple Green is your friend. Use a diluted mixture, spray on and wipe off. The problem with cig smoke is how the tar deposits on the plastics. You end up with a gooey mess. The Simple green cuts through it pretty good, but you might have to give it a few tries to get it all. Smoke gets into everything. Like a bad night at the bar coming home smelling like an ashtray. You got to scrub it all down and even then you might have to hang the old pine tree to knock the last of it out.
I don't smoke, but I've had to clean up cars after others. By far the worst is the ones that don't crack the windows at all. Its got no place to go but into/onto everything. My Father in law's Pontiac is a prime example. Non-filtered too, windows up. I had to simple green the steering wheel before I even started working on his steering column. you just stick to the gooey stuff on it. GROSS!

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Okay cig smoke is alot like feild mouse crap. It nevery really comes out unless you do what i did. For the plastics clean them really well with simple greeen gut the rest and Paint! paitn will get rid of that smell really fast. Once you repaint the interior black it will smell much better. however a smell will linger on really warm dayus. for that a good airfreshoner works nice

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
ill pick up some simple green tomorow, give that a go. im also going to try the paint they sell at lmc truck for colour matching interior panels. the door cards are stained with nicotine and tar pretty bad, but they are in good shape. i figure i may as well try to spay them blaack as buy new ones. that may cover some of the smell off thedoor cards. i have till monday off to work on the old girl, so im hopin i get as much of the interior done as i can. the only things i wont have is a new dash pad, rails for the buckets and a center consol.

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Nice truck. Welcome to the board. Ditto on the SimpleGreen. And you'll be able to get everywhere when you have the seats out. SG is pretty neat stuff. Supposedly, it changes the chemistry of oils, makes them bio-degradable. It should kick ciggy tar pretty easily. When you get around to replacing the motor, you'll find lots of great advice in the "Engine & drivetrain" forum. You're smart to start one thing at a time, though.

Re: new to the forum. my new old truck
Dont try painting anything until you get the tar off. Plastic or metal. It would be like spraying paint over grease. Meaning it will look like crap. If paint/dye is going to be used I'd still used some grease/wax remover before painting to get the last of the crud off of there.
I used Krylon fusion paint on my plastic door panels and with good prep work the paint adheared really well. Then again they were not from a smoker's truck either. Warm up those arms because you got some scrubbing to do! Good luck!
